Surfriders rally past Chargers in 10 innings, 3-2

KAILUA — Joey Cantillo's two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh sent the game into extra innings in which Jalen Ah Yat drove in the game-winning run in the 10th inning for a walk-off 3-2 quarterfinal win over visiting Pearl City Thursday afternoon.

The Surfriders, the defending league champ, move on to face Mililani in the first Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I semifinal Friday afternoon at Les Murakami Stadium at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.

The win also clinches a state berth for Kailua, who defeated Pearl City in back-to-back seasons in the playoffs.

Cantillo pitched seven and 2/3 innings in the win on 114 pitches, scattering four hits while striking out 10 and walking three. Ryan Inouye earned the win on the mound for the Surfriders.

Pearl City, who scored a run in the fifth and sixth inning, left the potential go-ahead run on third base in the top of the 10th inning.


Cody Riturban led off the bottom of the final stanza with a single, which was followed by Cantillo reaching base on balls. Dylan Kurahashi-Choo Foo got a hit to load the bases before Ah Yat brought Riturban home for the game-winning run.

It was Ah Yat's third hit in his four recorded at-bats on the day.

Cantillo's game-tying single was his lone hit of the day, finishing 1-for-4 with a drawn walk.

Dillin Hasegawa was charged with the loss for the Chargers, pitching three and 1/3 innings. Starting pitcher Jansen Shigeta pitched four innings on 49 pitches, but was pulled in favor of Marcus Boyles. Boyles pitched one and 2/3 innings before giving way to Hasegawa.

Carter Hirano batted 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead Pearl City in the loss.

Sam Prentice's only hit of the afternoon drove in their second run to go up 2-0 in the top of the sixth inning. 

The Chargers' chase for the OIA championship is over, but their journey to the HHSAA D1 state tournament trudges on.

Pearl City will play Moanalua Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. in Salt Lake. The winner receives a state berth and a spot in the Saturday's OIA fifth place game against the winner of Kaiser-Kapolei.

Na Menehune are coming off a loss to Mililani.
