MILILANI — After a wild fourth quarter, McKinley (9-3) pulled away 57-49 to defeat Waianae (5-6) to advance in the Oahu Interscholastic Association boys basketball Division I Playoffs. The Tigers will take on OIA West regular season winners Kapolei (10-0) in the quarterfinals round.

Jeremy Coloyan led the way for the Tigers, scoring 19 points with Kevin Kim putting up 13 points of his own. On the Seariders' side, Douglas Mitchell had a team-high 16 points.

McKinley maintained control throughout most of the first half, but the Waianae managed to tie the game at 25-all with just over two minutes left. The Tigers regrouped to pull back ahead 33-29 heading into the locker rooms.

After McKinley extended their lead to 41-32 after three minutes of play in the third quarter, Waianae answered with a 9-0 run to bring the score back to a tie, but the period ended with the Tigers back up by a single point, 44-43.

A field goal by Waianae's Manu Taukolo 35 seconds into the final quarter would start a chain of four lead changes over the next three minutes. With the Tigers up 48-47, McKinley slowed the game down with extended possessions on offense, pulling ahead by six with a minute remaining in the game.

Waianae's Mitchell hit a jumper and was fouled on the shot but was unable to capitalize on the three-point play opportunity.

Down by four with 0:52 left, the Seariders resorted to fouling as a last-chance effort, but the Tigers went 4-of-6 from the charity stripe to put the game away at 57-49.

Waianae ends its season at 5-6 in league play and 8-10 overall. The Seariders were 4-2 in the OIA midway through January, but they dropped three of their last four regular season games to finish fifth in West standings.

The Tigers will play Kapolei at 7 p.m. Friday night at Kapolei High School. Both teams opened their seasons against each other back at the end of Nov. 2016 with the Hurricanes winning 63-47.
