SALT LAKE — Second-seeded Maryknoll's size and depth proved to be too much as the Spartans overwhelmed Kaimuki, 58-23 in the quarterfinals of the Snapple/HHSAA Division I Girls Basketball State Championships at Moanalua High School.

The win sets up a rematch of last year's semifinals between Lahainaluna (20-2 overall) and Maryknoll (27-2 overall), where the Spartans won in a two-point thriller, 63-61.

The Bulldogs (16-10 overall) coming off their first opening-round state tournament win after five tries, drops to play Mililani (17-7 overall) at 3 p.m.

Bella Cravens outmuscled the Bulldogs to post a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Rhianne Omori added 10 points and two steals.

Kaimuki only made one field goal and a free throw in the second quarter and the Spartans scored 16 to take a commanding 29-9 lead at halftime. The Spartans turned up the pressure on the Bulldogs to force 21 total turnovers and shot 11-for-50 (22 percent) from the field.

Victoria Kintz, the Bulldogs' leading scorer (14 points per game), played only 13 minutes and was held to four points and drew four fouls. Kaelyn Espinda led the Bulldogs with eight points and made two 3-pointers.
