Punahou pulls away from Castle, 4-1

WAIPAHU — Jamie-Lyn Shimamoto scored a goal in each half to lead second-seeded Punahou to a 4-1 win over Castle in a quarterfinal of the Queen's Medical Center/HHSAA Division I Girls Soccer State Championships at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium Thursday afternoon.

The Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Buffanblu (11-1-1) got three second-half goals to pull away from the Knights (11-3-1).

Shimamoto, a sophomore midfielder/forward, got Punahou on the board with her first goal of the game, which came in the 29th minute.

Three minutes into the second half, junior Layla Santos found the back of the net for her 11th goal of the season.

Castle pulled within a goal on Ciana Rivera's goal in the 50th minute, but Shimamoto converted a penalty kick one minute later to stretch the Buffanblu lead to 3-1.

Sophomore Lauren Mukaigawa closed out the scoring in the 65th minute with her team-leading 12th goal of the year.

Punahou will play defending state champion Pearl City at 7 p.m. Friday in the Waipio main stadium.

Castle, which finished third in the Oahu Interscholastic Association, will play Baldwin in a consolation match, 3 p.m. Friday at field No. 8.
