Seabury Hall outlasts Waipahu in 4-3 thriller

Seabury Hall outdueled fourth-seeded Waipahu in a back-and-forth affair Thursday afternoon for a 4-3 win in the quarterfinal round of The Queen's Medical Center/HHSAA Division II state tournament at the Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.

Makena Doughtery bookend the Spartans' scoring — including the go-ahead score in the 76th minute — to lift unseeded Seabury Hall into the Division II semifinals, where it will face three-time defending champion Hawaii Prep Friday at 1 p.m. The match will be played in the soccer complex's main stadium.

Waipahu, the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II champion, struck first on Kayla Carabbacan's first goal of the season in the third minute. Doughtery scored in the 32nd minute to make it a 1-1 game at the break, but Carabbacan notched her second goal of the afternoon just one minute into the second half.

Senior forward Jenna Carvalho found the back of the net in the 53rd minute to tie the game at 2-2 for the Spartans.

Alissa Lei Walin gave Seabury Hall its first lead of the game in the 70th minute, but Waipahu came right back to tie the game three minutes later on Karlee Manding's goal from close range.

Doughtery's goal in the final minutes of the match was enough to close the game out in regulation.
