Top seeds cruise through day one of state tennis

Defending champions Kawika Lam, of Punahou and Taylor Lau, of Saint Francis, had little difficulty taking care of business on day one of the Carlsmith Ball/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Tennis State Championships at Patsy T. Mink/Central Oahu Regional Park Thursday.

Lam, who is seeking his third consecutive boys' singles title, did not drop a set in either of his two first-day matches. He beat Parker's Timm Schnorr, 6-0, 6-0, in the round of 32 and swept past King Kekaulike's Eden Mackinnon by the same score in the round of 16. All of the other top seven seeds also reached Friday morning's quarterfinal round. Lam will take on Farrington's Andre Ilagan, the Oahu Interscholastic Association titlist, in an 8:30 a.m. match next.

In the girls' singles draw, Lau is safely through to the quarterfinals after beating Kalani's Dale Emoto, 6-0, 6-0, in a first-round match and Lahainaluna's Nicole Aceret, 6-0, 6-2, in a second-round match. She will face Kealakehe's Michelle Uyeda, who upset seventh-seeded Lisa Owen of Kaiser in the opening round, in an 8:30 a.m. quarterfinal Friday. Owen was the only seeded player to lose Thursday.

Iolani's duo of Jordan Azuma and Phuc Hyunh, the top seed in the boys' doubles draw, as well as Kamehameha-Maui's Sarah Ikioka and Kylee Kato, the top seed in the girls' doubles draw, are both through to the quarterfinals.
