Campbell begins defense of OIA Red crown


Top-ranked Campbell begins its defense of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red baseball championship this week.

The Sabers (11-1), the Red West champion, is their division's top seed in the 12-team Red tournament. Opening-round games start Wednesday with the top two teams from each division drawing first-round byes.

West runner-up Mililani (7-5), East champion Kailua (9-3) and East runner-up Roosevelt (8-4), along with Campbell, will host quarterfinals Thursday.

In opening-round games Wednesday, Kaiser (8-4) will visit Kapolei (5-7), Leilehua (6-6) will meet Castle (2-10) at Howard Oda Baseball Field at Wahiawa District Park, Kalani (7-5) will travel to Waipahu (6-6), and 'Aiea (4-8) will play at Moanalua (8-4). Yes, Moanalua's field is ready for action. All games start at 3:30 p.m.

Opening-round losers are eliminated from the tournament.

On Thursday, the winner of Kaiser-Kapolei visits Campbell; the winner of Leilehua-Castle will meet Roosevelt at Stevenson Middle School field;  the winner of Moanalua-'Aiea will visit Mililani; and the winner of Waipahu-Kalani travels to Kailua. All quarterfinals are 3:30 p.m.

Quarterfinal winners advance to Friday's semifinals at Hans L'Orange Park. The four semifinalists will have Division I state berths. The losers move on to the fifth-place semifinals at the higher-seeded team's site. The losers are done for the season. The winners play for fifth place on Saturday and will have qualified for the state tournament..

Friday's winners play for the championship, which starts 30 minutes after the White championship at Hans L'Orange. Friday's losers play for third place on Saturday.

The six-team White Tournament begins Thursday with two games.

Kaimuki (3-8) will visit Nanakuli (8-3) and Farrington (3-8) will travel to Waialua (8-3). Both games start at 3:30 p.m. The losers are eliminated from the tournament.

The winner of Nanakuli-Kaimuki at Wai'anae (11-1) and the winner of Waialua-Farrington plays at Radford. Both games start at 3:30 p.m. The winners advance to Saturday's title game, 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Hans L'Orange. The losers play for third place Saturday.

The top three teams from the White qualify for the Division II state tournament.
