ALA WAI--Pac-Five exploded for five runs on six hits in the bottom of the sixth inning to rout Mid-Pacific Institute, 8-1 at Ala Wai Field on Wednesday afternoon. Pac-Five's Brazzlynn Tovio-Asato led the way with a 2RBI single in the first inning and an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth. Tatiana Guzman scored three runs and Karley Ann Yoshioka added two runs for the Wolfpack.  

"There was something where we tried to work on. We kind of give the lead away and go flat and they were up and they did real well and I'm proud and they're happy. It's just one of those days when they were playing perfect ball and other team wasn't, fortunately we came out ahead," said Pac-Five coach Cecil Hasegawa. 

The Wolfpack improved to 2-1 in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I standings while the Owls fell to 1-1. 

"We know that Mid-Pac is a good hitting team and from outside league we know who can hit and where they can hit, we had Karley behind the plate and she's experienced with a lot of them and when they started hitting the ball we knew how to adjust," said Brazzlynn Tovio-Asato. 

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Keila Lee got on base after she hit a single to right center field. She advanced to third and Sarah Holden beat the double-play to reach first safely. Tatiana Guzman chopped a short RBI single to bring in Lee. Noelle Nakamura hit a grounder past first and second base to put Holden at third and Guzman on second. 

"After a couple innings, we got used to the pitcher and knew where she was throwing and we would help each other if someone was up we would say where the catcher is moving so they're ready and make contact," said Tovio-Asato. 

Karley Ann Yoshioka hit a deep ball to the centerfield, but it bounced off Owls' center fielder Samantha Sakihara's glove to score Nakamura, Holden and Guzman to put Pac-Five up, 7-1. After, Tovio-Asato hit an RBI triple to score Yoshioka. 

"That error out there cost them, it happens," said Hasegawa. 

Mid-Pacific led 1-0 in the top of the first inning after Jenna Kumabe got on base after she hit a double near center field. Kumabe then scored on Nicole Lopez's sacrifice fly. 

Pac-Five's defense stepped up as they yielded only one hit the whole game. 

"It made it a little easier for our pitcher and they caught 10 outs out there," remarked Hasegawa.

In the bottom of the first inning, Kaili Ann Akimseu walked Tatiana Guzman. Nakamura's bunt allowed Guzman to advance to second and later moved to third after Karley Ann Yoshioka hit a double to the right field. Tovio-Asato's 2RBI single to the right field brought in Guzman and Yoshioka to put Pac-Five up, 2-1. 

"I just think that if one person starts something up, everyone jumps on it and we know what we're capable of and we know how to adjust quickly and we showed that," said Tovio-Asato. 

"She's been doing that ever since last year, she's been hitting the ball real good. Kind of glad of that timely hit and it helped her confidence," said Hasegawa on Tovio-Asato. 

In the bottom of the second inning, Guzman scored another run off of Nakamura's RBI single to left field to make it 3-1. 

Pac-Five will play 'Iolani on Saturday, Mar. 15 at 10 am while Mid-Pacific goes to Kamehameha-Kapalama on the same day at the same time. 

"Mid-Pac is a very good team, beating them gave us more confidence in ourselves in future games," said Tovio-Asato. 

"We have a lot of confidence and we're playing 'Iolani on Saturday and going into that we have two practices on Thursday and Friday and we just need to work on the areas we need to work on and polish the skills and we should be okay," said Hasegawa.
