WAIPAHU - After peppering Kaiser's goal all night, Punahou finally got one in at the 98th minute in a 1-0 win in the quarterfinals of the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts Division I state boys' soccer tournament at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.

The Buffanblu (8-3-3) will meet second-seeded Baldwin (11-0-2) in a semifinal 7 p.m. Friday at the main stadium.

Alec Dinsmore's goal from 10 yards ended the sudden-death, double-overtime period with two minutes to spare before heading into the penalty kicks.

"The ball came through from Brian Yanagi," Dinsmore said. "I was one-on-one with the guy on my side. I remember coach telling me to take a 'toebee' (kick from the toe)."

The third-seeded Cougars (12-3) did their best against the winningest program (18 titles) in state tournament history.

"What a battle," Kaiser coach Marco Antonio Gloria said. "It's just unfortunate. A little defensive mistake and that was it. Two minutes left. I thought we had it. I really thought we had it."

For Punahou, it was just a matter of time before it would score. The Cougars took 21 shots on goal, but only one required a save by Punahou goalie Henry Engel. But Punahou had 11 of its 12 shots saved by keeper Michael Austin.

"We were controlling the pace of play and getting the opportunities," Punahou coach David Trifonovitch said. "It just took us a little longer to put the pieces together."

Cutting it close has been somewhat of the Buffanblu's signature this season, Trifonovitch said.

"These kids have been the heart-break kids all year," he said. "We just squeaked into the playoffs. We're just squeaking by yesterday. Everything has been the heart-break kids. If they're  going to keep doing it all the way to the end, I'll take it. I'll have more gray hair and less of it, but I'll take it."

The Bears (11-0-2) needed penalty kicks to defeat Kapolei, 2-1, in another quarterfinal.

CJ Harvey gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead at 11:19, but the Bears tied the game at 57:23 on a goal by Matthew Foronda.

After two scoreless 10-minute overtime periods, the Bears beat the Hurricanes, 5-3, in PKs.

Jaren Otani, Nicholas Lawrence, Foronda, Derek Hight and Benjamin Wuthrich scored PKs for the Bears. Shay Akau, Marcelo Dadino and AJ Epstein connected for Kapolei.
