Hawaii avoids winless season with 49-42 win over Army


HALAWA — Sean Schroeder passed for 322 yards with three touchdowns and rushed for another score to lead Hawaii to a 49-42 win over Army Saturday night.

A crowd of 27,157 at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium saw the Rainbow Warriors avoid just their second winless season in school history to conclude the year with a 1-11 record.

Hawaii racked up 608 yards of total offense, including 285 rushing yards. Joey Iosefa rushed for 155 yards on 28 carries and Steven Lakalaka carried 19 times for 105 yards. Both scored a rushing touchdown and it marked the first time since 2009 that UH had two players surpass 100 rushing yards in a game.

Scott Harding, Marcus Langkilde, Vasquez Haynes and Harold Moleni each caught a touchdown pass and Chris Gant had game-highs of eight receptions for 116 yards.

A.J. Schurr rushed for four touchdowns to lead Army's triple-option rushing attack. The Black Knights entered the contest with an FBS-leading 333.1 rushing yards per game, but were held to 254 by the Hawaii defense. John Hardy-Tuliau had a team-high nine tackles for the Rainbow Warriors, who recorded nine tackles for losses, including two sacks.

Early Saturday morning, Hawaii running back Willis Wilson drowned near Sandy Beach. The Rainbow Warriors honored him by wearing "WW" decals on the back of their helmets and ran their first offensive play from scrimmage with 10 players.
