Tuileta becomes state tourney all-time passing leader

Punahou quarterback Larry Tuileta became the state tournament career passing leader with 1,730 yards and 19 TDs after leading his team to a 28-22 win against Mililani in Saturday's Division I championship.

The previous mark was held by Leilehua's Andrew Manley with 1,535 yards (2007 to 2009 covering seven games). Tuileta needed only 70 yards to tie the record entering the game. Because Punahou had first-round byes in the three tournaments started by Tuileta, his feats were accomplished in six games. Tuileta had already surpassed Manley's 15 tournament career TDs in last week's semifinal.

Tuileta passed for 265 yards and three touchdowns on 16-of-29 passing with one interception against Mililani. He finished his career with 6,930 yards and 76 TDs on 486-of-803 passing. He is the only quarterback in the Division I tournament to start three title games.

By finishing 11-0, Punahou is the first Interscholastic League of Honolulu team to finish unbeaten since Saint Louis in 1996 (13-0) and the first Buffanblu squad since 1961 (12-0). A member of the 1961 team was University of Hawai'i coach Norm Chow.
