MILILANI – The guardians of the North Shore have talent no matter the level.

"I'm just very happy for our boys, they worked extremely hard," said Kahuku JV coach James Kammerer after the win. "I'm grateful for our admistiration and (for varsity head) coach Reggie (Torres) giving us the opportunity. The parents also do a great job raising their boys which makes are job so much easier."

Kahuku avenged a regular season defeat to Farrington to bring home the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red junior varsity title Saturday afternoon at Mililani's John Kauinana stadium. The Governors won the first meeting between the two teams, 23-14, on Oct. 5.

"It means a lot; we worked hard all season," said Kahuku running back Harmon Brown. "It's a good win for us. We lost to these guys in the regular season, to beat them feels really special."

Brown was the main source of offense for the Red Raiders, carrying the ball 27 times for 88 yards and the games' first touchdown. He also gained 26 yards on two punt returns giving him 114 all-purpose yards for the afternoon.

Complementing the Red Raider offense was a stingy defense. Kahuku's defense held the Governors to 83 yards of total offense and just one touchdown. They also brought down Farrington quarterback Joziah Anakalea four times and hurried him into throwing an interception.

"I just know I did good and I did my job," said Kahuku sack leader Lerod Tongi. "Our defense executed what they needed to do."

Tongi finished with six tackles, two sacks and a quarterback hurry to lead the defense. Other defensive players who had sacks for Kahuku were Pesa Lefau and Jacob Zane-Higa.

Kahuku's defense got off to a hot start forcing a turnover on the Governors' second play from scrimmage.  Red Raider defensive back Stokes Botelho recovered an errant Farrington pitch at the Governors' 14-yard line just 45 seconds into the game. However, Farrington's defense responded to keep Kahuku out of the end zone and force a field goal attempt. Jurell Kai's 29-yard field goal attempt was wide right and the Governors got the ball back with seven minutes and 52 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The strong defensive start from both teams carried during the entire duration of the first quarter as no team was able to get a score in the opening period.

Kahuku's first score came early in the second quarter on Brown's six-yard plunge. Brown was the catalyst of this scoring drive carrying the ball five times for 31 yards. Kai's point after touchdown was good and the score was 7-0, with nine minutes and two seconds remaining in the first half.

The Red Raiders next score came on a beautiful connection between quarterback Samutu Avea and wide receiver Royce Pao. Avea rolled left on bootleg play-action play and was able to find Pao deep before getting drilled by Farrington's David Fuiava. Pao was able get behind two defensive backs for the 67-yard touchdown catch to put the Red Raiders up by two scores. Kai's PAT was good to give Kahuku a 14-0 lead heading into the break.

Farrington came out strong in the third quarter and was impressive on both sides of the ball in the opening series. The Governor defense stuffed Brown in the backfield and even dropped him for a 19-yard loss to hamper the Red Raiders' second half opening drive.

The Governors got the ball at the Kahuku 43-yard line to give them good field position for a scoring drive. Challen Faamatau's one-yard plunge out of a double tight T-Bone formation capped off an eight-yard drive that took four minutes and 40 seconds off the clock.

That scoring drive would be Farrington's only score of the game as the Kahuku defense prevented any late scores. Kai added a 33-yard field at the 4:56 mark in the fourth quarter for the final score, 17-7.

"I'm just so proud of our boys; a great group of young men," said Kammerer. "Ialso wanted to thank my wife and family for all their support this season. I'm going to miss the boys and I wish them the best."
