Moanalua looking for first win against Leilehua

There's some history between teams in three of the four opening-round games of the O'ahu Interscholastic Association Red football tournament.

This week's winners advance to the quarterfinals the weekend of Oct. 18-19.

East champion Farrington and runner-up Kahuku, and West champion Mililani and runner-up Campbell draw first-round byes. They will host quarterfinals next week.

Friday
At Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium, 6 p.m.
West 6 Waipahu (2-6) vs. East 5 McKinley (4-4)
Waipahu leads the series, 20-14, and won the last meeting in 2011, 34-27. The teams have met only once in postseason. In 2002, McKinley won 27-7 in a first-round game.

Winner of this game travels to Campbell.

At Moanalua
JV: West 5 Aiea (2-4) vs. East 4 Moanalua (3-3), 4:30 p.m.
Varsity: West 5 Leilehua (5-3) vs. East 4 Moanalua (3-5), 7:07 p.m. (OC 16)
The teams have met 23 times since 1973, Moanalua's first season in varsity football. The Mules have yet to be beaten. The most points in a game Na Menehune have scored against the Mules over the years is 14. They met in last year's quarterfinals with Leilehua winning 29-3.

Winner of this game travels to Mililani.

At Kapolei
JV: East 5 Castle (2-4) vs. West 4 Kapolei (2-4), 5 p.m.
Varsity: East 5 Kailua (2-6) vs. West 4 Kapolei (5-3), 25 minutes after end of JV game
Because Kapolei is new, the teams have met only four times. The Hurricanes lead the series, 3-1. Two of the games were in postseason, both in the first round of the OIA Red tournament. Kapolei won 35-14 in 2006 (at Mililani) and 14-7 in 2007 at Kapolei.

Winner of this game faces Farrington, presumably at Roosevelt.

Saturday
At Wai'anae's Raymond Torii Field
East 6 Castle (3-5) vs. West 3 Wai'anae (6-2), 6:07 p.m. (OC 16)
These teams have a lot of history in postseason, having met six times. Wai'anae is 5-1 in postseason against the Knights, whose only win came in the teams' last meeting in the 2009 OIA Red quarterfinals, 23-16. Overall, the Seariders lead the series, 22-6.

Winner of this game visits Kahuku.
