Holiday, of UH 'Fab Five' fame, to coach MPI boys

Mid-Pacific Institute has named former University of Hawaii basketball player Dwight Holiday as head coach of its boys basketball team, the school announced Tuesday.

Holiday was a member of the Rainbow Warriors' "Fab Five" teams from 1970 to 1972. He has previously served as an assistant on the staffs at Maryknoll, Damien and Punahou, but had been away from coaching to run basketball camps for several years before applying for the Owls' position.

His nephews, Jrue and Justin Holiday, play in the NBA. Jrue with the New Orleans Pelicans and Justin with the Philadelphia 76ers.

"Dwight will be a great addition to the coaching staff here at Mid-Pacific Institute," Owls' athletic director Scott Wagner said in an e-mail. "The boys basketball team has made excellent strides over the last few years, and the Owls are poised to make some noise in the (Interscholastic League of Honolulu). There is a great deal of excitement surrounding our team right now, and we are very excited to welcome Dwight and all of his great experiences as a player and a coach."
