Kalaheo shuts out Roosevelt in league opener, 15-0

Makena Johnston rushed for 95 yards and two first-half touchdowns and finished with 172 all-purpose yards Friday night to help visiting Kalaheo blank Roosevelt, 15-0, in the O'ahu Interscholastic Association White Conference opener for both teams.

One play after Jake Swenson's interception, Johnston zig-zagged 33 yards -- breaking several tackles along the way -- for a spectacular TD run with 2:59 remaining in the first quarter. James Green tacked on the extra point.

Later, Johnston returned a punt 37 yards to the Rough Riders 3-yard line, then ran it in for the score on the next play with 8:07 left in the first half. After an encroachment penalty on Roosevelt, Jake Bell found David Kealoha on the two-point conversion attempt to make it 15-0.

The Rough Riders managed only 32 yards of offense in the first half and penetrated the red zone only once in the second half, getting to the 19-yard line after an encroachment penalty before the final play of the game.

Johnston returned three punts for 62 yards and had a 25-yard kick return to open the second half.

Kalaheo even its overall record to 1-1; Roosevelt fell to 0-2.
