KAILUA -- Nyenoa Ulangca-Kauweloa caught a 4-yard touchdown pass from Brandon Felisi with 34 seconds remaining and Joshua Gohier added the game-winning extra point last night as Nanakuli stunned Kalaheo, 21-20, in O'ahu Interscholastic Association football action at Kailua Stadium.
The Golden Hawks improved to 1-2 overall with their first White Conference victory, while the Mustangs fell to 1-1.

Nanakuli had taken a 14-0 halftime lead but Kalaheo closed it to 14-6 on Cristian Johnston's 3-yard TD run on fourth-and-goal with 1:48 remaining in the third quarter. The Mustangs then cut it to 14-12 on Rashaan Matalolo's 1-yard quarterback sneak three minutes into the fourth quarter and then went up, 20-14, after Johnston's 7-yard scoring run and Matalolo's two-point conversion run with 1:54 left.

After the ensuing kickoff, the Golden Hawks faced third-and-12 from their own 40-yard line when Felisi was chased out of the pocket and scrambled toward the left sideline, where he launched a 52-yard pass to Joseph Shelton. Kalaheo was whistled for encroachment before the next snap, setting up Felisi's game-tying pass to Ulangca-Kauweloa on a rollout to the right.

"One big, lucky play," Nanakuli coach John Lopes said, referring to the 52-yard pass. "They had our guy sacked, but we got lucky, that's all I can say."

Kalaheo coach Chris Mellor said it wasn't all luck.

"It was blown coverage, we let the guy get behind," Mellor said. "But that's football -- one big play like that can make the difference."

On the touchdown play afterward, Felisi rolled to his right looking for a slot receiver who eventually fell down, Lopes said. But Ulangca-Kauweloa found a seam in the middle and waved his arms, drawing Felisi's attention.

On the first play after the ensuing kickoff, the Mustangs attempted a double-pass but it was intercepted near midfield by Preston Saragosa and the Golden Hawks proceeded to run out the clock.

That finally ended a wild game that had several twists and turns since the opening quarter.

Nanakuli took a 6-0 lead nine minutes into it on Felisi's 1-yard sneak on fourth-and-goal, after Lansen Liki intercepted a pass and returned it 30 yards to the 5. The two-point conversion run attempt failed.

Another turnover -- Gary Shelton's fumble recovery on the Kalaheo 8 after a muffed fair catch -- set up the Golden Hawks' next score, an 8-yard run by Joseph Shelton with 5:48 remaining in the half.

Joseph Shelton then thew a two-point conversion pass to brother Gary to make it 14-0.

The Mustangs out-gained Nanakuli, 196 yards to 138, but threw three interceptions and lost three fumbles -- with all three fumbles inside the 30-yard line.

"We're young (only 10 seniors), but we're playing hard and playing tough," Mellor said. "We just gotta get better."
