Moanalua and Pearl City became repeat champions at the fourth annual Mililani Judo Invitational.

Na Menehune got a key ippon from Chaeden "Bubba" Grace-Reyes in the final match of the tournament, helping to secure a 45-30 victory over Punahou.


On the girls side of the bracket, Kapolei took an early 30-0 advantage, but Pearl City did not allow a single Hurricanes point down the stretch in a 59-30 victory.


Taking the early advantage, Kapolei’s Shanelle Ramelb opened the girls finals with a quickly earned ippon after pinning down Pearl City’s Kristin Roche with a low one-armed shoulder throw. Kapolei was awarded an automatic ippon and Amanda Abila in the 109-pound division earned an ippon over Jasmine Rivera bringing the Hurricane’s lead to 30-0. But that was all the points Kapolei scored as Pearl City did not allow any more to be scored.


Kicking off Pearl City’s point drive to the win was Joen Tominaga’s yuko over Ilisha Badua in the 115-pound division. Sherese Ader swiftly earned an ippon after pinning Kapolei’s Sydney Cofran in under a minute in the 129-pound division.

Trudi Eltogonde and Ariana Fernades both won by waza-ari (Kapolei’s Jocelyn Tabion was penalized with 3 shidos to give Fernades an automatic waza-ari). Pearl City was awarded 3 automatic ippon in the 122-, 172-, and 220-pound division.


Over in the boys championship Punahou took the lead 15-0 with an ippon and yuko by Cameron Kato and Weston Kogachi respectively. Moanalua’s Kelsen Onigama converted a waza-ari into an ippon to bring Na Menehune closer to the Buffanblu, 15-10.

Moanalua’s Briant Tsuda drawed out 3 yuko from Troy Enoka to tie the points, 15-15, and Kulana Salera converted a waza-ari into an ippon to take the lead over Punahou, 25-10. However the Buffanblu immediately tied the score with an automatic ippon from an opponent-less Evan Uehara and LJ Remillard added 5 points with a yuko against Moanalua’s Jeff Kim to retake the lead for Punahou, 30-25.


The deciding match for the championship was settled by Moanalua’s Chaeden Grace-Reyes who flipped Punahou’s Cody Martinson out of the circle to earn a ippon; and Moanalua’s Ryan Souza earned an automatic ippon in the 275-pound division to add extra points to defeat Punahou, 45-30, and give Na Menehune another championship title.
