Kealakehe's season-opening 36-34 non-league win over Kailua Saturday was a coming-out party of sorts for quarterback Tyler Yates.

The Waveriders' senior factored into all five of his team's touchdowns against the Surfriders, in the game that took place at the Kailua-Kona campus on the Big Island. Yates, a 5-foot-9, 150-pound senior, got the scoring started on a 65-yard touchdown run less than a minute into the game. His 8-yard TD pass to John Kamoku near the end of the first quarter gave Kealakehe a 14-7 lead.

With the game tied at 14-all midway through the second quarter, Yates found Jordan Cristobal on an 8-yard scoring strike. He scored his second rushing touchdown on a 19-yard run with one minutes and 15 seconds until halftime, to make it 28-21 Waveriders at the intermission.

Yates, who finished with 92 rushing yards, put Kealakehe up by two scores following a 54-yard TD pass to Giuseppi Zapatoliva with 7:38 left in the third quarter. He passed for 162 yards on 13-of-25 passing with two interceptions. Yates, a 2010 All-Big Island Interscholastic Federation first team selection, also made all four of his extra-point attempts in the win.

Kailua scored twice in the final 6:38 in the game and pulled within two after Kahaku Iaea and Lee Kealoha hooked up on a 7-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-two inside of the final minute. However, the Surfriders' ensuing two-point conversion attempt failed when Kealakehe's Tama Paogofie-Buyten sent Iaea out of bounds at the Waveriders' 2-yard line to seal the victory.

Kealakehe hosts Kamehameha-Hawaii Saturday in a non-league game.
