Waimea Menehunes

Head coach/off/def coordinator: Kyle Linoz (1st season, 6th overall)

Players to watch: LB/RB Kade Erdman (5-7, 165, Sr.), OL/DT Tyrus Haumea (5-8, 280, Sr.), QB/DB Maka Shigematsu (5-7, 150, Sr.), WR/DB/P Anson Lazaro (6-1, 165, Sr.), DB/TE/K Joey Sams (6-0, 170, Sr.)

Coach's words: "You can expect us to be well-conditioned, organized and ready for all four quarters. We have great player turnout - more than usual - but we continue to be the smallest in size and stature, as compared to our local opponents. Kapaa and Kauai High have exceptional football programs led by outstanding coaches with many years of high school coaching experience. We have a totally new staff, lots of first-time high school coaches, so there's a lot of uncertainty, but we look forward to proving that we belong." - Kyle Linoz

SL's take: Linoz begins his second stint as coach of his alma mater. The 1991 Waimea graduate and former standout quarterback was hired to succeed reigning KIF Coach of the Year, Jason Caldeira, who resigned from the post following the 2019 season. Linoz was an assistant under former coach and current-athletic director Jon Kobayashi. He was the head coach for five seasons from 2006 to 2010, when the Menehunes went 17-25-1 overall and 10-19-1 in league play. Waimea went 4-4 two years ago, including a 3-3 record in KIF play, which was good enough for a second-place finish. Shigematsu was selected by league coaches as a KIF all-star as a sophomore utility player that season and will be looking to orchestrate the offense as the QB, while also serving as the last line of defense as the FS on the other side of the ball. The Menehunes' last winning season was 2017, when they finished 4-3 overall and 3-3 in division, and their last appearance in the state tournament was in 2003 - the very first year of classification. Linoz is a longtime youth football coach on Kauai, so familiarity with his players will help, but Kapaa's size in the trenches and overall experience will be hard to overcome. After dropping its three games against Kapaa in 2019 by scores of 41-0, 24-0 and 31-19, Linoz and Waimea will look to close that gap this fall.
