Lahainaluna Lunas

Co-head coaches: Robert Watson (32nd season) and Dean Rickard (2nd season)
Offensive coordinator: Rickard
Defensive coordinator: Watson

Players to watch: RB/DB Blare Sylva-Viela (5-10, 170, Sr.), RB/DB Christian Clarion (5-6, 150, Sr.), OL Dylan Kawaiaea (6-0, 250, Sr.), OL/DL Carter Oldham (6-0, 265, Sr.), WR/DB Shaun Kana (5-9, 155, Sr.)

Coach's words: "We tell our players that the game of football in its simplest form comes down to being able to move the ball, block, tackle, commit the least amount of turnovers, play penalty-free, make necessary adjustments offensively and defensively, and to stop the other team from scoring, but be able to score yourself. That whoever executes better and commits less mistakes will definitely increase the chance for success and that is what we are trying to concentrate on every day in practice this early in the season. Work on the little things - fundamentals and technique - and hopefully progress with everything else falling into place throughout the rest of the season." - Dean Rickard

SL's take: After what can be described as nothing less than a dominant run in Division II, the Lunas are set to test the waters in D1 this fall. But they will have to do it with mostly new faces. Among those they'll be looking to replace are reigning All-Hawaii D2 Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year in Joshua Tihada and Tuipulotu Lai. Just five players who saw limited playing time as sophomores on Lahainaluna's state championship-winning team in 2019 return for their senior season, which means Rickard, Watson and company will be banking on a number of underclassmen to step up despite no experience at the varsity level. The good news, however, is that most of those players of those players are familiar with the Lunas' philosophy and system due to their involvement with the Big Boys' team at the middle school level. While this Lahainaluna squad won't be one of its biggest in terms of size, there are a number of athletes who will be asked to share the load, including Sylva-Viela and Clarion, both of whom will contribute in the offensive backfield and the defensive secondary. The promotion to D1 shouldn't be too much of an adjustment for the Lunas, as they regularly play both the D1 and D2 teams in the MIL as part of a double-round-robin schedule.
