Head coach: David Tautofi (6th season) Offensive coordinator: Kawehi Moefu Defensive coordinator: Daniel Tautofi
Players to watch: ATH Avin Tanioka (5-8, 167, Jr.), LB/TE Sione Taufa (6-0, 225, Sr.), K/P Kurt Kawamoto (5-9, 160, Sr.)
Coach's words: "We can expect a group of players just eager to get out on the field and play football. We're very young and that brings a lot of challenges. I do hope that with those challenges we find opportunities that would give us a step up, but we'll see what we look like once the season starts. There's a lot of expectations that come with being defending OIA champions, but it's a new season and a new era. I'm just glad these kids can get back out and play again." - David Tautofi
SL's take: The Bulldogs came off a memorable 2019 season that saw them capture their first OIA Division II championship in nearly a decade. Tautofi earned All-Hawaii Coach of the Year honors that year, which saw a total of 13 players from Kaimuki selected to the All-OIA first or second teams. Just one of those all-stars remains on this team: Kawamoto, who was both a Second Team All-OIA and Second Team All-Hawaii kicker. His 22-yard field goal with no time left on the clock lifted Kaimuki to a 27-24 win over Roosevelt in the league championship game two years ago; Tautofi said that Kawamoto is now converting kicks from 50 yards out in practice with regularity. The lone senior on the OL is Demetrius Moefu-Tautofi (5-9, 309, Sr.) at the center position; the rest of the line is made up of sophomores. Taufa, who can bench press 225 pounds 16 times, and Tanioka were both on the varsity as a sophomore and freshmen, respectively, in 2019 and will be expected to contribute on both sides of the ball, but especially defensively. Tanioka will play safety on defense and a bit of everything on offense, Tautofi noted. Kaimuki lost its promising signal-caller, Jayden Maiava, when he decided to return to the state of Nevada for his senior season of football. Maiava, who was an All-Hawaii first team QB as a sophomore, has verbally committed to UNLV. With Maiava departed to the Silver State, Kenny Eaton (5-11, 178, Sr.) assumes the reins at QB. He will benefit from the addition of Saint Louis-transfer Jeremiah White (5-11, 162, So.), who, according to Tautofi, has off-the-charts athleticism.
