Kailua Surfriders

Head coach: Hauoli Wong (6th season)
Offensive coordinator: Afton Smith
Defensive coordinator: Chris Jose

Players to watch: DE/TE Elijah Laufiji (6-2, 235, Sr.), DE/TE Blazen Lono-Wong (6-4, 255, Sr.), DB/WR Keoni Williams (5-8, 195, Sr.), OT/DE Dan Palenapa (6-1, 245, Sr.), WR Japheth Lilo (5-9, 185, Sr.)

Coach's words: "I would say that we're a very fast, fundamentally-sound team and as far as stacking up with the rest of the division, I feel that as long as we take of the football, limit mistakes and, of course, stay healthy, I feel that we'll be right there contending in our division." - Hauoli Wong

SL's take: Depth is not one of the strong points for this Kailua squad, but as Wong describes, he's got the "right guys in the right spots." It starts on the line of scrimmage, in the trenches, where the Surfriders have the most experience. On the offensive side of the ball, Palenapa has been a mainstay at LT since his sophomore season. While he is not the biggest offensive lineman in terms of stature, Palenapa is incredibly strong and has a motor that allows him to fill in on defense as a pass rusher on third-and-long situations. Palenapa will serve as the blindside protector for QB Romeo Ortiz (5-10, 170, Fr.), who Wong describes as having "Michael Vick-like ability." Ortiz takes over the offense for Cameron Friel, who is now a freshman QB with the UNLV Runnin' Rebels. Ortiz can lean on a solid 1-2 punch at RB in Koyo Kekauoha (5-8, 185, Jr.) and Ikaika Quidachay (5-8, 170, Fr.). Wong notes that the pair complement each other nicely, with Kekauoha excelling on between-the-tackles runs and Quidachay serving as more of a speed back. Kaimi Kalama (6-4, 280, Jr.) is expected to contribute on both the OL and DL at OG and DT, respectively. Williams and Lilo are the playmakers in the receiving corps, which gained depth - and speed - with the addition of Saint Louis-transfer Nainoa Smith-Akana. With a roster low in numbers and a freshman at QB, Kailua will have to lean heavily on its defense and, of course, avoid injuries if they hope to make a push for one of the four coveted spots in the OIA playoffs.
