Ewaliko powered Baldwin in OT win over Lahainaluna

With the score tied at 7-7 at halftime in a defensive struggle, Keelan Ewaliko had a message for the rest of his Baldwin teammates.

"The first half we came out a little bit flat, its not usually how we come out." said Ewaliko. "But the second half I told my team, 'If you want it more you gotta go get it.'"

The 6-foot, 180-pound Ewaliko did it all for Baldwin in 20-17 win over rival Lahainalua, rushing for 136 yards and a score and throwing the game-tying touchdown pass. He was also the team's punter and attempted a 50-yard field goal that would have won the game in regulation.

Trailing 14-7 wiith just over 3 minutes left in regulation, it was the defense who cracked the door to a comeback open, as Abraham Reinhardt recovered a botched Lahainaluna exchange on a handoff in Lunas territory.

"Thanks to my defense, you know they came up big for us." remarked Ewaliko. "They gave us that last hope."

And given a golden opportunity, the senior signal caller rallied his offense, converting the turnover into the game-equalizing score, capping off a six-play drive that spanned just 1:38 with a nine-yard pass to a wide-open Zacharia Coloma-Mariano in the left corner of the endzone. A Coloma-Mariano kick levelled the score at 14-14 with just over two minutes left to play.

"The play was just a quick pass, but I had to go through my progressions," recalled Ewaliko. "my last guy (Coloma-Mariano) was wide open in the corner of the end zone. So I had to gun it in there."

Then, after the Bears' defense held the Lunas to a field goal to start the overtime session, it was Ewaliko who got his number called on each play from scrimmage in the extra frame.

"I really didn't know my coach was going to call my number all those times." said Ewaliko. "I was just ready to do whatever it takes to win. If I couldn't pass the ball, just run it"

And the University of Hawai'i commit did just that, scrambling for a five yard gain, followed by a nine-yard pickup, setting up the game-sealing play on 1st and goal.

"The third and final play was an off-tackle run." said Ewaliko. "I just had to take my time, be patient, wait for the holes to open up. And once I saw the hole, I just tucked my shoulder and ran in."

The deciding 6-yard run marked the twentieth carry of the game for Ewaliko, but from that point on, it was his teammates who would return the favor, hoisting the senior quarterback skyward in jubilation.

"After we scored it was just an awesome feeling, like you know we did it."
