Male Athlete of the Week: Nakea Hanohano, Kamehameha baseballNakea Hanohano didn't get much of a chance to show his stuff as a junior last year, but the Kamehameha outfielder is making the most of his shot this season.
The 5-foot-10 senior, and No. 3 batter in the lineup, has been on a torrid hot streak at the plate all year and last week was no exception.
Hanohano batted .500 (5 for 10) in his team's three games last week — all victories — with four runs batted in and three runs scored.
In last Tuesday's 5-2 win over Punahou, Hanohano went 3 for 4 at the plate. He drove in Logan Salcedo for the game's first run in the top of the third inning and scored one of four Warrior runs in the top of the seventh, when they pulled ahead for good.
The win put Kamehameha back in the win column after it saw a seven-game win streak snapped with a 6-2 loss to Saint Louis just three days prior.
The Warriors parlayed the win over the Buffanblu in a hard-fought 1-0 victory over the Crusaders Thursday. Hanohano went 0 for 3 in that game, but rebounded in a big way two days later with a 2-for-3 effort in Saturday's 10-0 five-inning win over Maryknoll.
Hanohano had a pair of doubles with three RBI and two runs scored and also drew a walk against the Spartans.
"He came up clutch in all of those games," Kamehameha coach Tom Perkins said of Hanohano. "He played a big role, made a couple nice catches out there, but it was the fact that he kept us in the game and made a couple clutch hits driving in runs when we had guys in scoring position. That's why he's there, that's why he's our third batter. He was a big part of getting us through last week."
It's a far cry from Hanohano's limited role on the team last season, when he registered just one official at-bat.
"He was injured for most of the last year," Perkins said. "He had some arm problems so kind of preserved him a little bit last year and saved him for this year. He was taking care of his arm. He was throwing, but he wasn't throw hard, but we had high hopes for him. He's looked a lot better this year. His arm is strong and accurate and he's hit the ball well."
That's quite the understatement.
Through Kamehameha's first 13 games this season, all Hanohano has done is put together an Interscholastic League of Honolulu-best .425 batting average. He also leads the league in runs scored (13) and is tied with teammate Logan Salcedo for the most hits (17) in ILH play. Hanohano also ranks second in doubles (4) and third in runs batted in (10).
"He's doing a great job in there. He did well this past summer in (American) Legion ball. He got stronger and got his confidence back in the fall league and played pretty good again," Perkins said. "I think Nakea feels comfortable now and he's been coming around nicely."
Hanohano started the year out in right field, but has since moved to center.
"I think he's found a home there," said Perkins, who noted that Hanohano can also play some infield and even pitch, if need be.
"He's not a regular pitcher, but he's got a good arm. He's got good velocity, a decent off-speed pitch with his slider and he doesn't mind pitching a couple of innings, (but) we'll use him only if we have to because he's real valuable to us in the outfield," Perkins said.
Kamehameha ascended to the top spot in this week's ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings and improved to 11-2 with Tuesday night's 7-0 win over Iolani.
Hanohano and the Warriors will conclude the ILH first round against Punahou at 6:30 p.m. Friday and Mid-Pacific at 3 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be played at Ala Wai Field.
Female Athlete of the Week: Sammie Ofoia, Saint Francis softballSammie Ofoia is a blue-collar type of ballplayer.
That "lunch-pale mentality" has served the junior well this season and the main beneficiary has been her Saint Francis softball team.
Opposing teams have had their hands full with the 5-foot-10 Ofoia, who has hit safely in all eight of the Saints' games this season. She is batting a blistering .476 with 10 hits, 12 runs scored and a team-high 13 runs batted in 21 official at-bats.
"She's been outstanding. Offensively and defensively, she's been playing really well for us," Saint Francis coach Randy Langsi said of Ofoia, who bats clean-up.
The Saints posted four straight wins, including wins over Punahou and Maryknoll in a span of three days last week — both of which Ofoia played a big part in.
Ofoia batted 3 for 3 with a double in Wednesday's 11-5 win over the Buffanblu. She also drew a walk and scored a run in the game.
Two days later Ofoia doubled and drove in a pair of runs in a back-and-forth 7-6 win over the Spartans. She reached base safely in all four of her plate appearances Friday, drawing a pair of walks and reaching on an error. Ofoia also stole a base — her first of the season — and scored a run.
"She just goes in and just does her job every day. She hasn't been flashy or made a lot of noise or anything like that," Langsi said. "She's just been doing her job and she's been consistent on both sides of the ball."
Langsi praised Ofoia's pitch-selection and discipline at the plate.
"She's seeing a lot less good pitches, but he's able to put the bat on the ball and she's staring to grow as a player," Langsi said. "She knows that they're going to pitch around her and she's not going to see anything fat, so I think what I'm proud of her for. She's a great person and she's been buying into what we've trying to do. The fact that she's been able to sustain that pace is surprising in a way, but we also expected that of her and she has very high expectations of herself."
Ofoia, who has given a verbal commitment to Southern Illinois-Edwardsville, has been a stalwart in the Saints' lineup the past three seasons.
As a freshman, Ofoia batted .464 with 26 hits, 19 runs scored and 27 RBI. She had 15 extra-base hits that season, including seven home runs. Last year she hit .477 with 21 hits, 21 runs scored and 15 RBI and three home runs.
"I think as far as her potential, the sky is the limit," Langsi said. "She's unbelievable. I don't think she's really tapped into her talents yet."
Ofoia, who also plays basketball in the winter, earned All-Hawaii Division II first-team honors in both of her first two varsity seasons on the diamond.
Saint Francis went 8-12 in her freshman season and posted a 10-9 campaign last year.
This year the Saints have compiled a 5-3 record and on Monday moved into the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings for the first time this season at No. 8.
"Basically, as coaches, we just want them to trust the process and buy into what we're trying to do here," Langsi said. "We have a mix of young and old, but regardless of whatever situation we find ourselves in we just want to go into every game and compete as hard as we can. We want to put the best product that we can on the field and make no excuses, regardless of division.
With PAC-5 moving up to the D1 ranks, and Sacred Hearts unable to field a team this year, Saint Francis was left as the lone D2 team in the ILH.
Consequently, the Saints will automatically receive the league's berth in the D2 state tournament, but play an exclusive-D1 schedule in the regular season. Langsi is hoping that experience of playing against the proverbial big boys will pay off in May.
"Part of the goal-setting for us was to finish on top of the ILH, even amongst the D1 teams," Langsi said. "We have to think that way. We can't think that we're just going to be able to walk into states. We have to have that confidence going into because it's not going to be a cakewalk. There are a lot of good teams out there."
Ofoia and the Saints are idle this week. They will play next on Apr. 5 at Iolani.
