Male Athlete of the Week: Damien Awai, Baldwin baseballDamien Awai overcame an early misstep to turn in a rock-solid performance in the season-opener for the reigning Division I state champion Baldwin baseball team Thursday night.
The 6-foot-1 senior right-handed pitcher threw a complete-game one-hitter to lead the Bears to a 7-0 win over Lahainaluna at Iron Maehara Stadium in Wailuku.
Awai struck out eight batters and walked three and faced 24 only 24 batters in an 87-pitch outing as Baldwin started off play in the Maui Interscholastic League on the right foot.
Despite the shut out, it wasn't always smooth sailing for Awai.
"Everything was working, it's just that at first he couldn't get that first pitch across for a strike — whether it was a fastball or a curveball," Baldwin coach Shane Dudoit said.
Awai was forced to bite down through some early pain after a pre-game mishap Thursday.
"During our pre-game he actually tweaked his ankle a little bit," Dudoit said. "He stepped in a little hole that guys sometimes fall into at Maehara so he ended up falling behind on batters and really struggled to make adjustments. I think it wasn't until the fourth inning that he threw a first-pitch strike, but he was able to come back and battle. He had some 3-2 counts that he was able to win and get outs on, so he did a good job of regaining his composure and really settling down and getting those outs."
Dudoit said he noticed Awai struggling with his ankle enough in the first few innings that he had a notion to warm-up an arm or two in the bullpen.
"There was a thought that we might have to get guys ready early, especially when he got behind in counts, but I left it up to him and the trainer," Dudoit said. "The trainer said he was OK and Damien said he was OK to go."
As the Bears' second-day pitcher last season, Awai made six appearances with a record of 5-0 and a 1.14 ERA. In 37 innings, he allowed nine runs on 13 hits with 48 strikeouts to 10 walks.
"When he's comfortable he has the ability to really spot the fastball," Dudoit said.
Dudoit described the 195-pound Awai as a combination of both a power and finesse pitcher.
"He's got some power — his velocity is probably about 86-87 (miles per hour) — and he's got a strong arm, but he understands when he can let it rip and when he's got to command that fastball," Dudoit said. "He's has a few different speeds on the fastball, his curveball breaks off well and his out-pitch — the one he's been getting guys swinging and missing on — is his splitter that falls off the table."
It's not just to the plate where Awai has shown improvement early on this season.
"We've been progress with Damien being able to hold runners and the ability to change his times to the plate," Dudoit said. "He's quick-pitched before, but this year he's stepped that part of his game up and is keeping guys guessing on where he's going."
When he's not on the bump for the Bears, Awai can be found patrolling left field and batting third in the lineup.
"He's a plus defender, he's got a plus arm, he's got plus speed and he's a good leader, always communicating with the outfielders and the infielders pitch to pitch," Dudoit said of Awai, who earned All-Hawaii First Team honors after batting .478 last season.
"At the plate he brings a lot of power. He does swing and miss quite a bit, but he's not getting good pitches to hit. Everyone is trying to pitch around him and rather give up a walk because he can easily put it out of the park. With the strength that he's got, people will stay away," Dudoit said. "I don't think he'll see a fastball in an at bat."
Awai, one of two fourth-year varsity players, was selected as one of the team captains.
"The guys definitely respect him just because of his talent and he's vocal," said Dudoit, who is in his first season as head coach at Baldwin. "He's an extension of the coaching staff. If we need things done or taken care of, he's a very good guy to go to. We always tell the players to don't worry about what's only happening now, but what's the next step and Damien is always that one step ahead."
Baldwin went on to sweep the three-game series against the Lunas. Awai batted 2 for 3 with a triple, three RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's 12-2 win in six innings.
Awai and the Bears (3-0), who are ranked second in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, will next face Kamehameha-Maui (5-1) in a three-game set Thursday through Saturday at Maehara Stadium.

Female Athlete of the Week: D'Asha Saiki, Punahou softballD'Asha Saiki put on quite on the impressive display of power Friday afternoon.
Saiki, a sophomore infielder, slugged three home runs — including a 3-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning — to lead host Punahou in a 13-10 walk-off victory over Mid-Pacific.
The 5-foot-4 Saiki, who bats left and throws right, drove in an astronomical eight runs and also drew a walk for good measure.
"She had one of those types of games for the year. I've never seen anybody do that," Buffanblu coach Bob Makahilahila said. "
Saiki, who played first base Friday, hit third in the batting order. Her 3-run homer to right fielder in her first at bat was part of a five-run first inning for Punahou. Her second trip to the plate resulted in a two-run homer to right-center in the third inning before she walked in the her next at bat, in the fifth.
"They didn't want to let her at again," Makahilahila said.
The Owls opted to pitch to Saiki with the game tied at 10 and two Buffanblu runners aboard with one out in the bottom of the seventh.
"The very first pitch she saw was right down the pike and she just let it go and hit it over the centerfield fence by a good 15, 20 feet," Makahilahila said. "As soon as she hit it, I was looking at the ball and the trajectory and thinking, ‘this ball is gone.' As soon as it got in the air it was gone."
Makahilahila said there was a part of him that wasn't really surprised by Saiki's performance Saturday.
"She did that in the preseason, too. I believe we were playing Mililani in their tournament and we're trailing 3-2 and she comes up and works the count and they make a mistake pitch and she hits it over the fence," Makahilahila said, who noted an increase in power in Saiki's repertoire this year.
"It has improved," he said. "This year she's gotten a little bit more size on her. Last year she was a great spray hitter and could hit in the gaps, down the lines and to every field, (but) this year she puts it over the fence, so most definitely power has been added to her game."
By Makahilahila's count Saiki belted eight home runs in the preseason alone.
Her hot hitting hasn't stopped since the Buffanblu have started Interscholastic League of Honolulu play either. Saiki has gone 6 of 10 at the plate in four games. All but one of her base hits have gone for extra bases, including a state-best three homers and 13 runs batted in.
"The thing about D'Asha that I just marvel at is for a person that young she works at it really hard," Makahilahila said. "She knows what pitches she's going to go after and she's very selective. She's one of those kinds of hitters that if you make a mistake pitch to, she'll make you pay."
Makahilahila said Saiki takes a very methodical approach at the dish.
"She's a real student of the game. If you ever watch her when she bats in the cage or when she's warming up, she doesn't just swing the bat. She counts through her swings and looks at it from the standpoint of how she's hitting the ball. She studies and makes sure that her swing is consistent."
Saiki, who is verbally committed to Cal Berkeley, normally plays on the left side of the infield, but is dealing with some tendinitis in her shoulder and played first to minimize the number of throws she had to make across the diamond.
Makahilahila has even caught her fair share of games behind the plate over the years.
"I think she can play any place she wanted to. The only thing she doesn't do it pitch right now, but maybe if she made up her mind she could do that, too," he said. "The other thing is she's surrounded by a lot of supportive teammates in our shortstop, Jolie Fujita, and our pitcher, Bailey Akimseu. She herself is a standout, but she's got a great core of other people around her that she can lift with them."
Saiki set the bar high for herself with a promising freshman campaign that saw her bat .447 with 21 hits, 12 RBI and 10 runs scored last year.
Makahilahila said Saiki has the potential to leave Punahou as one of the program's great sluggers.
"We've had some great hitters like Mysha Sataraka (UCLA) and Reina Furuya (Penn State), both of whom played D1 ball on the mainland, and D'Asha ranks up there with both of them," Makahilahila said. "As a sophomore, in terms of hitting, she's probably ahead of them. Definitely, with a bat in her hands, she is something special."
The win over Mid-Pacific was a much-needed one after Punahou took one on the chin in a 12-1 loss to Kamehameha just two days prior.
"Needless to say it was really important for us because after being 10-run ruled against Kamehameha, I think the girls were kind of looking at themselves like ‘what happened?' " Makahilahila said. "They have a lot of goals that they set for themselves and they needed to come back after the loss and make a statement.
Saiki also drove in a pair of runs in Saturday's 17-0 rout of PAC-5, which helped the Buffanblu go to 3-1 on the season.
Punahou, the fourth-ranked team in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Power Rankings, does not play its next game until March 21, when it visits fifth-ranked Iolani (2-0-1).
