PEARL CITY — Kelci Sumida scored a goal and assisted on another to lead Moanalua to a 4-0 quarterfinal win over Aiea in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I girls soccer tournament at Pearl City's Bino Nieves Stadium Tuesday evening.

Na Menehune padded a 1-0 halftime lead with three second-half goals to improve to 10-0-1 with their ninth consecutive win. They also secured a spot in the state tournament for the third straight year.

"We knew what was at stake with this game and I think with the girls, the message was received at practice," Moanalua coach Nikki Dela Pena said. "We had focused practices and then it was really up to them to put the pieces together on the field tonight."

Sumida was a key piece for the Menes Tuesday — much as she has been all season.

The sophomore midfielder was one of four players to score. She netted her team-leading 14th goal in the 60th minute and helped set-up Moanalua's first goal of the game.

In the 31st minute, Sumida sent a cross from the left flank into the 18-yard box and freshman Sakari Bell re-directed it with her right foot into the bottom right corner of the goal.

"I don't remember who, but someone set a long ball toward the flag and everyone thought it was out, but then I kept running and then I saw the defender so I prepped my right foot and I just crossed it to Sakari and she just touched it in," Sumida said.

It was Bell's seventh goal on the year and her third in Moanalua's last two games.

The score held the 49th minute, when Alyssa Dela Pena made it a two-score lead with a well-placed direct free kick into the top left corner of the goal from about 20 yards out.

Dela Pena, who takes most of Moanalua's free kicks and long throw-ins, curved her shot over a wall of defenders at the 10-yard line and well out of the reach of the Aiea goalie for her eighth goal of the season.

About 11 minutes later, Sumida broke free and had a one-on-one with the Aiea goalkeeper that was set-up by a pass from Dela Pena. Sumida dribbled to her left, leaving the goalie in her dust, and poked the easy goal.

Aiea utilized an offside trap with its defensive line that caught Moanalua out of position at least seven times.

"The first half we were just trying to force our normal play, but second half we were talking to the girls and getting them to understanding how to get through a high-pressure defense and we made those adjustments and I think we played much better in the second half," Nikki Dela Pena said.

Sumida said her Dela Pena's halftime message addressed a lack of aggression in the first 40 minutes.

"She really wanted us to pick up the pace and just start pressuring the ball more because we were kind of just watching the play happen, so then we kind of stepped it up in the second half and we had a lot more opportunities," Sumida said.

Moanalua added a late goal on Kimi Casupang's penalty kick just before the final whistle.

It was the second time Na Alii (7-2-3) have been shut out this season.

Aiea will play Kahuku in a 7 p.m. consolation game Wednesday at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium.

Moanalua will face defending state champion Pearl City in Thursday's championship semifinal round at 7 p.m. at Castle.
