Waialua's Toia, Iolani's Oglivie collect top honors

Male Athlete of the Week: Tevesi Toia, Waialua football
Tevesi Toia answered the call for the Waialua football team Friday night and the result was its first league championship in 61 years.

Toia had a hand in all five of the Bulldogs' touchdowns in a thrilling 36-35 win over Waipahu on a wet evening at Hawaiian Tel FCU Field at Aloha Stadium.

The senior quarterback threw for a season-high 257 yards on 24-of-36 passing to lead Bulldogs their sixth Oahu Interscholastic Association title and first since 1955. Toia threw four touchdowns passes and also rushed for a team-high 81 yards and another score.

"He did an awesome job," Waialua coach Lincoln Barit of the 6-foot-1, 175-pound Toia. "We called him to the plate. I told him, ‘You've got to be a leader and this is your team to lead the offense,' and he stepped up to the plate and he took control."

Toia opened the scoring by scrambling for a 12-yard touchdown on fourth-and-10 about five minutes into the game.

"He could have thrown that ball because we had someone open, but he decided to take it himself," Barit said. "It's always something good when you have a double-threat, but he's coming around now and making better decisions, too."

The Bulldogs took a 13-0 lead just a few minutes later on Toia's 6-yard scoring strike to Caleb Apau on third-and-goal.

Later in the first quarter, Toia bought some time with his feet before hitting Lancen Kuni in the back right corner of the end zone for a 14-yard score.

"He got flushed out of the pocket and he was scrambling and saw Lancen back there and he threw a nice pass," Barit said. "Lancen was covered pretty good, so I was impressed with that throw (Toia) had."

Waipahu pulled within 21-20 in the second quarter, but Toia connected with Risein Campbell on a 5-yard TD pass before halftime for his fourth score of the night.

The Marauders eventually pulled ahead 35-29, but Toia led the Bulldogs on an 80-yard drive that led to the go-ahead score early in the fourth quarter. Toia completed all seven of his pass attempts on the drive, which culminated with his 8-yard scoring strike to Campbell.

"I was impressed that we were able to march it down and get that score to take the lead," Barit said. "That shows a lot of maturity on his part."

Toia's continued improvement in decision-making and ball security has coincided with Waialua's success this season. He opened the year with a disappointing five-interception game in a 22-20 loss to Kaimuki, but has cut down on the number of turnovers as the year has gone on.

"We try to encourage him because every time he would throw an interception he would get down on himself, but his teammates and his coaches kept encouraging him and as the season went on his confidence got better and better and he's maturing as a quarterback," Barit said.

Barit said that Toia played quarterback as a freshman, but played most wide receiver and some defense out of necessity the past two seasons.

"We had (two-year starter) Royce Tashiro as our quarterback last year and I thought Tevesi would be a pretty good receiver, so I told him he would get his chance at quarterback and now is his chance and he's proving he can do the job," Barit said.

Toia has honed his craft by attending quarterback guru Vince Passas's passing clinics over the summer.

"He developed his skills over there and has worked hard at it," Barit said. "Coach Passas did a good job with him."

For the season, Toia has thrown for 1,409 yards with 17 touchdowns against 15 interceptions, and has rushed for 266 yards and three TDs.

Waialua (7-2), the No. 6 team in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric Division II Power Rankings, willl make its state tournament debut when it takes on Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion and second-ranked Damien in a first-round game Friday at Campbell High School. Kickoff between the Bulldogs and Monarchs is set for 4:30 p.m.

Female Athlete of the Week: Elena Oglivie, Iolani volleyball
Elena Oglivie shined brightest in the biggest match of the season.

The 5-foot-9 outside hitter capped off a sensational week — and freshman season — with her best performance yet. Oglivie put down a team-high 23 kills with 22 digs to lead Iolani to its first crown since 2001 with a four-set win over defending champion Kamehameha in the title match of the New City Nissan/HHSAA Division I Girls Volleyball State Championships Saturday night.

"I wouldn't say I was surprised — because I got to see it the whole year — but just looking back on it and realizing she's a freshman and she was able to perform the way she did, especially in the state tournament, is pretty special," Raiders coach Kainoa Obrey said of Oglivie.

Oglivie hit .367 for the match, with just five errors in 49 attempts. She also had two service aces, one solo block and an assist against the Warriors.

"She just kind of kept going about it like it was any other match, which was pretty impressive, but there wasn't a moment where she felt overwhelmed, so that was definitely nice to see out of her," Obrey said.

Just one night earlier, Oglivie posted a season-high 25 kills with 17 digs in a four-set win over top-seeded Kahuku. That was after a 19-kill, 13-dig effort in a first-round sweep of Moanalua Monday, and an 11-kill, 16-dig performance in Thursday's four-set quarterfinal victory over Hilo.

Oglivie was selected as the tournament's Most Outstanding Player.

"You don't quite see many hitters at the high school level period that have the range of attacks that she does and to not only be able to hit it to different areas of the court, but also hit it at different speeds and then also hit a variety of sets well is pretty astonishing," Obrey said.

Obrey added that Oglivie's all-around athleticism and ability makes it difficult for him to take her off the court.

"It's one of those things where most hitters can do this one thing so we'll have her do that one thing, but Elena can hit from the front row and she can hit it from the back row," Obrey said. "In the beginning of the season she might not have had that range, but the during the season she showed what the ability to make adjustments and grow and I think that's a testament to where she's at as a volleyball player."

Despite her offensive talents, Obrey said Oglivie's defense has been a steadying factor for the Raiders all season.

"Some teams tried to serve her often, but her ball handling was outstanding," Obrey said. "There may have been one or two matches where she had a tough time and when you look at the stat book it may not show her blowing up, but her defense and ball-handling was always there. If she got blocked, she would still play defense, handle the ball, smile and have a good attitude and it made her a fun to play with her for her teammates and a fun kid to coach, for sure."

Oglivie, who had 5.13 kills and 4.73 digs per set in four state tournament matches, was joined on the all-tournament team by junior outside hitter Saige Kaahaaina-Torres and her older sister, Ana, a senior setter.

"It definitely helped Elena to have her sister on the team and I think it even helps just as much, if not more, to have Saige on the team, not just for their relationship, but because Elena doesn't have to do the whole load on her own," Obrey said. "Saige carries probably a bigger load for us and draws a bigger block, which allows Elena to play more free and she embraces that and takes advantage of those moments and performs well."

For the season, Oglivie hit .279 and averaged 4.63 kills and 4.63 digs per set. She registered 10 double-doubles on the year, including all four state tournament matches.

Obrey said there were no shortage of highlights from Oglivie this season.

"We're wowed every day by her," Obrey said. "Every day in practices and matches she does something and the coaches look at each other like, ‘Did she just do that?' We get our coaches to jump in and a play a little bit and she's blowing them up where they're having a tough time trying to dig her and you just don't see that in many seniors, let alone good players and obviously she's a freshman, so I hope I keep getting wowed every day."

As far as Oglivie's ceiling? Obrey says the sky is the limit.

"There's always the classic cliche of ‘However good she wants to be,' but Elena really works hard and understands where she wants to go with the game as a volleyball player," Obrey said. "If she puts in the work I wouldn't be surprised to see her playing at a high-level Division I school and maybe get some opportunities after that."
