WAHIAWA—Eighth-ranked Kapolei bounced back from last week's disappointing loss to Waianae by storming past Leilehua, 44-13 in a Oahu Interscholastic Association Red Division game on a rainy Saturday night at Hugh Yoshida Stadium.

The Hurricanes (1-1 overall, 1-1 league) had 403 yards of net offense and found success with the running game with 172 net rushing yards. Taulia Tagovailoa threw for 231 yards on 19-of-35, one interception and three touchdowns for the night. Josh Kansana rushed for 37 yards on 12 attempts and two scores.

"It was a tough loss and it was a mandatory thing to bounce back. That was one thing we had to work on—the running game. Hopefully we can carry that out for the rest of the season," said Tagovailoa.

"We had some negative rushing yards against some tough run defenses and we were able to run the ball a little bit," said Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez.

The Mules (0-3 overall, 0-2 league) have been outscored 163 to 37 in their first three games and are searching for answers.

"It's been a rough schedule and these guys have been making these mistakes early and we can address it. We have to fix our turnovers, that hurt us again early and that was hard to fight back from it," said Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda.

Kapolei did not start the game on a good note as Braxton Victor got two early sacks on Tagovailoa. He bright spot for the Mules on the defensive side and led the team with seven tackles and had three sacks. Kapolei took the ball at midfield, and the Hurricanes drove all the way down to the Leilehua 9 until Tagovailoa was intercepted by Charles "Moku" Watson.

The Mules couldn't capitalize on the turnover as Kalani Segovia intercepted Kona Andres and returned it to the Mules' 7 yard line. Tagovailoa immediately found Jaymin Sarono for the first score and Beau Meyer's PAT made it 7-0 at the 5:50 mark.

Nine seconds later, Segovia got his second interception and four plays later, the Hurricanes scored off of Kansana's 2-yard run, but the PAT failed.

"He's been playing well and has been jumping the routes properly and is getting it done, we are happy with his development as a senior," said Hernandez, on Segovia.

Andres struggled which led to Kaleoaloha Piceno taking reps at quarterback, but the Mules could not generate much offensive movement.

"We asked him to do certain things and if it's not done, then we are going to make that change. That was the decision we made and I felt that he learned his lesson and we put him back in," said Tokuda, on Andres.

Kansanas' 7-yard run capped a 80 yard drive that covered six plays.

Beau Meyer, who was 5-for-5 on PATs for the night, blasted a 43-yard field goal 44 seconds before halftime to give the Hurricanes a 23-0 lead.

To open the second half, Leilehua got on the scoreboard in five plays after Andres threw a 51-yard touchdown to Jayjay Antolin. Antolin led all receivers with 68 yards.

Andres finished the game 13-of-33 passing for 134 yards, two touchdowns, but threw four interceptions for the game. Omar Mareko's would-be pick six for 84 yards was called back due to a penalty. Kapolei went to the ground game after Leighton Rosa scored on a 28-yard touchdown.

After Leilehua turned it over on downs, Tagovailoa threw his third touchdown to Wyatt Perez for 6 yards. Tagovailoa managed to spread the ball around to seven different receivers.

"We have not hit our stride and we have to get Wyatt more involved and our other receivers. We moved some guys and shuffled them. Our slots, o-line and quarterback is our strength of the offense. Everybody else is moving parts and working parts," said Hernandez.

The Mules were able to string a consistent offensive drive that was aided by a pair of Kapolei passing interference calls. To end the drive, Andres threw a 1-yard pass to Piceno, but the pass failed for the final score of the night.

Kapolei travels to the Windward Side to play Castle (2-1 overall, 1-1 OIA) on Aug. 26, while Leilehua hopes to get back on track as they travel to Nanakuli (0-2 overall, 0-1 OIA) on Aug. 27.
