Led by another stellar performance in the circle by Tyanna Kaaialii, Pearl City advanced to the OIA Division I semifinals with an 8-0 win over East top-seed Kaiser.
The win marked the Chargers' second game without a hit allowed in as many days, as Kaaialii combined with Kristin Frost for a 17-1 no-hitter against Moanalua in the opening round Wednesday.
"Its unheard of for me," said Pearl City coach Chad Obara. "I haven't been a part of anything close to that, so to get two in a row was big. So I'm very happy for her, she puts in the work and she deserves it."
Kaaialii was nothing short of dominant against a potent Cougars' lineup, allowing no hits and just two walks while striking out 14 in seven innings of work.
She struck out the first nine batters she faced, and looked completely in control until the final frame, where she surrendered back-to-back walks with two outs in the seventh.
"Today a lot of it was my confidence," said Kaaialii. "I believed in myself and my team had my back."
After a quick meeting at mound, whatever nerves Kaaialii may have had didn't persist, as she buckled down and pitched her way out of trouble, getting the final Kaiser batter to strike out looking to preserve the no-hit bid and secure the victory.
"We just kept reminding her of the score, telling her that she doesn't have to anything more," said Darian Obara of what was said to Kaaialii prior to the final out being recorded. "She was already playing excellent the whole game."
Offensively, Pearl City jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the second on an Ana Cabato line drive double to center that scored Noel Saunders and Taylor Shigeta.
The Cougars kept within striking distance until the sixth inning, when the Chargers exploded for six runs to provide a sizeable cushion for Kaaialii to work with.
"As far as insurance runs go, you can't ask for more insurance than that," said Obara. "All year long we've been preaching executing on the offensive end and putting pressure on defenses and they did it today. They put the ball in play when we needed it and things went in our favor."
Hailey Yamaguchi led the inning off with a single, and Kylie Tasaki drew a four-pitch walk to put runners on first and second.
Saunders' sacrifice bunt moved both runners over to second and third, and Shigeta reached on an error that allowed Maiki Au to score from third and load the bases.
Tasaki came home to score on a fielder's choice to make it a 4-0 game, before Cheyne Obara laid down a bunt and reach first safely to load the bases once again. That brought up Hope Casarez who eventually saw ball four, allowing Shigeta to score.
Then with two outs, Darian Obara lashed a line drive single to center to score Cheyne Obara and Casarez to make it 7-0, before an error allowed Frost to score the sixth run in the inning for the Chargers.
Darian and Cheyne Obara each collected two hits in the game, with Darian driving in two runs. Frost was 1 for 4 with a triple and a run scored, while Cabato was 1 for 4 with a triple and added three RBIs.
The Chargers, who are currently riding a four game winning streak, will take on West second seed Mililani in a 7 p.m. semifinal tomorrow at McKinley, while the Cougars host Roosevelt tomorrow at 3 p.m., with the winner securing one of two remaining berths to the state tournament out of the OIA.
