Two East side rivals will go West this weekend for a chance to win a league title.

The championship game of the 12-team Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament pits the top two seeds from the Eastern Division — and neighboring schools — Kalani and Kaiser against each other at Kapolei Stadium.

Kickoff between the Falcons (12-0) and Cougars (9-2-1) is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will follow the 5 p.m. Division II final between Roosevelt and Waialua.

It will be the second meeting between the teams this year. Kalani won at Kaiser (2-0) on a pair of first-half goals a little more than two weeks ago.

"It's hard to beat a really good team twice in a season, so they're going to be extra motivated," Falcons coach Michael Ching said. "We played them at their field and I think they're more suited for a bigger and better field. Their field is not the greatest, but we're playing a big field (at Kapolei) and they have a lot of technical skill, a lot of speed, so it's going to be a very hard matchup."

Toshihiro Kosins, a senior fullback, scored the second goal in that game off a direct free kick in the 30th minute. It was his second goal of the season. Kosins' third goal came Thursday night, in the 15th minute of a hard-fought 1-0 semifinal win over Kapolei.

However, Kosins reaggravated a left ankle injury in the first half against the Hurricanes and did not play the final 60 minutes. He said he hopes to play Saturday.

"That's a big concern," Ching said. "It didn't seem like it was as bad where he couldn't go (Thursday) in an emergency situation, but we do have a day off (Friday) so we'll ice it, elevate and all that stuff."

Takahiro Kosins, a senior forward, is Kalani's top offensive threat and amongst the state's best. He has 27 goals, which ties him for the most in all of Division I this year.

The Falcons, who have 11 seniors, have outscored their opponents 61 to 6 on the season and are the lone remaining unbeaten in the OIA.

Several of the seniors on this year's team were freshmen when Kalani won its only state championship in 2013. A year ago it reached the title game once again, but came up short against Mililani.

Despite their recent success, the Falcons have never won an OIA crown.

"Every year we always lose in the OIAs," Toshihiro Kosins said. "To be able to be the first team to win a championship in school history would be amazing."

Kaiser, meanwhile, is seeking its second league title in three seasons. It won its only OIA championship in 2014 under current coach Marco Antonio Gloria.

The Cougars are coming off a convincing 3-0 semifinal win over Radford Thursday night. Freshman Makana Srivongsana led the way against the Rams, much as he has all season long.

Srivongsana, a freshman midfielder, scored the first two goals Thursday — both coming in the first half — to bring his season total to 21 goals, which ranks him only behind Takahiro Kosins and Kapolei's Shandon Hopeau in all of D1.

Sophomore midfielder Noah Mokulehua has contributed 12 goals for Kaiser. His older brother, Micah, did not play in the semifinal round after an injury late in Tuesday's 1-0 quarterfinal win over Castle.

"He got stomped on in the last minute so he was out," Gloria said. "He's one of our strong guys in the middle, he's the biggest guy on the team and he's got excellent technique so we're trying to work on him so we can get him back. We will need him dearly, but we have a deep bench. We really do. We have a lot of guys will a lot of skills, so we try to use our skills versus their power ball."

Ching also noted the importance of the elder Mokulehua to the Cougars' defense.

"The last time we played them he moved to the back and was defending against Taka and he's skilled enough to handle Taka, so that's very concerning," said Ching, who noted there will be no shortage of familiarity Saturday.

"I think Kaiser, with the rivalry, we know each other, so it'll be more familiar for us," Ching said.

Gloria is just thankful that his Cougars have a chance at redemption after a subpar performance the first time they faced the Falcons.

"It's a great feeling. After our loss in the (regular season), we didn't have a good day that day and I just thought it was two cheap goals, so we want a rematch and we've got it," Gloria said. "They're a great team so we're trying to do our best."

The same two schools met in the inaugural junior varsity championship last week, which was won by Kaiser, 3-1.
