Kapolei's Williams, Kamehameha's Afoa garner weekly recognition

Male Athlete of the Week: Ty-Noah Williams, Kapolei football
Ty-Noah Williams had a game to remember Friday night.

The senior wide receiver had a career night, catching seven passes for 302 yards and four touchdowns in Kapolei's 41-0 win over visiting Castle in a first-round game of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament.

The Knights left their defensive backs in one-on-one, single coverage against the Hurricanes' receivers and Williams took advantage.

"I thought what happened was they loaded the box and sometimes they blitzed six, seven guys and they played without a free safety and a lot of man-to-man coverage," Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez said. "Early on, after the first series, I told our guys that we're going to have to man up (because) they're going to come and challenge our offensive line to protect (quarterback) Taulia Tagovailoa and challenge him to get the ball off quick and challenge our receivers."

The performance vaulted Williams to 926 receiving yards on the season, which ranks second behind Kamehameha's Kumoku Noa in the state. As a junior last year, he caught 21 passes for 283 yards and four TDs.

"We've been setting a lot of records in passing and receiving categories," Hernandez said. "Last year Naliko Kea had 36 receptions in a season, which was a record and now we have three guys around to with more than 36 catches. I'd say we're doing a pretty good job of passing the ball."

The Hurricanes, who were largely run-oriented for years, are averaging 308 passing yards per game under first-year offensive coordinator Galu Tagovailoa.

"Last year we lost to Kahuku, 9-0, in the quarterfinals and during the offseason I told myself that we're going to have to open up the offense because we have a solid defense but we can't score points and that was the reason I brought Galu in," Hernandez said. "Ty-Noah has languished in a couple of offenses as a non-featured receiver. He started as a sophomore, but we ran the ball with a lot of option. As a junior Naliko Kea was our go-to receiver, but we knew that (Williams) had the speed and talents to be a game breaker and he put it all together Friday night."

It was the third game this year in which Williams went over 100 receiving yards. He caught seven passes for 114 yards and three touchdowns in a season-opening win over Kaiser and followed that up with eight grabs for 133 yards against Kahuku in week two. However, he struggled at times with controlling his emotions on the field, Hernandez said.

"He's a real fiery and emotional guy that wants to compete and wants to score every time," Hernandez said. "He has really matured as the season has gone on. I told took him on the side and I said, ‘look, you're a great player and a great talent, but you can't dwell on things that happen on the field, you can't go back and change it,' but he's such a competitive guy sometimes that he'd get worked up when a call didn't go his way, or when he dropped a pass, so I told him he needed to forget about it, have a short memory and make a play the next time you get out there."

Williams, a three-year starter on offense who also doubles as the punt returner, has helped with the maturation of freshman quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa.

"It helps a lot," Hernandez said. "We only have two seniors (offensive lineman Sean Auwae, a UCLA-commit, and Williams) really that are full-time starters on offense and both guys are three-year starters. Sean is the left tackle and the blind-side protector and Ty-Noah is the z-receiver, who is on the right side and toward the quarterback's throwing arm, so those are two of the most important positions on the field for a passing team and those guys have to be productive for us to be successful."

Hernandez said that Williams, who also plays basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring, is an adept blocker as well.

"He mixes it up with corners and safeties; he's not afraid to block," Hernandez said. "Some of his stickers on his helmet, two or three of them are for pancake blocks. He's the only one on the team that has had pancake blocks as a receiver."

Williams and the eighth-ranked Hurricanes (6-3) will visit fourth-ranked Kahuku (8-0) in a quarterfinal-round game Saturday at Carleton E. Weimer Field.

Female Athlete of the Week: Kayla Afoa, Kamehameha volleyball
In her first two years on the Kamehameha volleyball team, Kayla Afoa played a complementary role behind a couple of superstars.

This year, Afoa has emerged as a go-to player for the Warriors.

That was evident Saturday afternoon as Afoa, a 5-foot-9 junior outside hitter, put down 25 kills with 10 digs and an ace in a four-set win over Punahou.

"She's been key for us all season," Kamehameha coach Chris Blake said. "She's always on the court, she's always doing the little things here and there to ensure that the team is doing well. She comes from a pretty athletic family and just doing the things she's done as a junior is a great testament to her work ethic and preparation."

Afoa, a co-captain along with senior middle blocker Brooke Kaawa, steps into the role previously filled by standouts Alohi Robins-Hardy, now a sophomore setter at BYU, and Tiyana Hallums, now a freshman outside hitter at Gonzaga.

"Kayla's a three-year starter for us. She was on the team as a freshman and I think she learned a lot from that team, with (then-seniors) Faith Maafala and Alohi," Blake said. "She was a key contributor from the beginning, but last year she was coming off a knee injury when she tore her knee up in November of 2013."

Blake said after surgically repairing her knee, Afoa "rehabbed the heck out of it" and was able to play at about "70 to 80 percent of where she was before."

Afoa, who also participates in track and field in the spring, has come back stronger this season.

"Coming into this year, she was healthy and ready to go and she was voted by her teammates as one of their captains," Blake said. "She's such an explosive player. She's recovered and then some, she has versatility and she has always had a great volleyball IQ. She's just a hard worker and she's been doing a lot of great things for us."

During her time at the Kapalama campus, Hallums was known as a fiery competitor who often wore her emotions on her sleeve.

"(Kayla) is not necessarily a rah-rah leader like Hallums was last year," Blake said. "Her way of leadership is more by example, so she's kind of more like Alohi in that sense, whereas Tiyana it's like ‘jump on my back and I'm going to tell everyone about it and let's go.' She's grown into that role, she's definitely one of our leaders and she continues to grow through it."

As a six-rotation player, Afoa's backrow skills often go unnoticed, Blake said.

"She anchors our defense," Blake said. "Her ball control is very steady. A lot of things for us are based on our defense and things that are kind of unseen and doesn't show up in stats. Kayla's definitely the anchoring piece to what we're doing on the court and off the court as well."

After being swept by Punahou in the first of three regular-season meetings, Kamehameha has won the last two times the teams have met.

"It was good for us," said Blake, whose team dropped the first set, 25-15. "We started off really slow, (but) a lot of it was based upon what Punahou was doing to us. We were able to settle down through games two, three and four and Kayla had a consistent effort throughout the whole match."

Blake said he was surprised by Afoa's final statistics after it was all said and done.

"I remember being at a (Seattle) Sonics' game once and they were playing against (Charles) Barkley," Blake said. "It was kind of boring, but I remember looking up at the scoreboard and seeing that he had 32 points and that's kind of how Kayla's match was. I didn't realize she was that productive because she was so efficient and it was so workmanlike and I guess because we expect out of her."

Afoa and the Warriors (8-4) visit Maryknoll Tuesday and Sacred Hearts Saturday before wrapping up the Interscholastic League of Honolulu Division I second round against Mid-Pacific next Tuesday.
