Roosevelt's Davis, Iolani's Choy collect weekly honors

Male Athlete of the Week: Jordin Davis, Roosevelt football
Jordin Davis' first career interception was nice, but it was quickly overshadowed by his second one.

The senior free safety picked off two passes, including the game-clincher, in Roosevelt's 17-14 double-overtime win over Waialua at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium Friday night.

"I think the key to that was our first two downs we stopped their run and forced them into third-and-long," said Rough Riders' coach Jeff Azuma. "We were able to get some pressure up front, they tried to roll away from it, but our defensive line did a good job getting up in his face, forcing a tough throw and Jordan was in the right place at the right time and made the interception.

Davis' interception — the seventh by the Roosevelt defense in the game — set off the celebration for Azuma's bunch, which was seeking its first division win in three tries.

"We knew the impact of that game," Azuma said. "I wouldn't say our season was riding on it, but it definitely put us where we needed to be at that point. That win right now is huge for us, not just confidence-wise, but if you look at the scheme of where we stand in our league, that win may be important down the line."

The win was the first for the Rough Riders (2-2 overall, 1-2 league) since a season-opening 39-0 non-league victory over McKinley back on Aug. 7 and helped them bounce back from a 43-0 blanking at the hands of division-leading Radford six days prior.

"We were 0-2 going into our third game and we needed a win because we couldn't afford to go to 0-3," Azuma said. "We weren't dwelling on the Radford loss, but we had an opportunity for us to beat a very good ball club obviously and a team that we may end up in that head-to-head battle with for a playoff spot, so the kids knew the importance of the game and luckily for us it worked out in our favor and now at least we have a better opportunity."

Waialua had 339 yards of total offense to just 137 for Roosevelt, but Davis and the rest of the defense came up with turnover after turnover.

Ethan Valiente recorded three interceptions, fellow cornerback Brendan Namba also picked off a pass and strong safety Temujin Grey-Wolf recorded another interception. All three, along with Davis, are seniors.

"They're just playing well together," Azuma. "I think the whole defense is playing well together. I don't know if I would say it's one component over the others, because I think our defensive line played well. We got pressure that caused some of the turnovers."

Davis, who saw limited time as a reserve defensive back as a junior, has seen big gains this year according to Azuma.

"His understanding of the game has improved," Azuma said. "He's putting himself in the right position to make plays. I'm happy for him. The kid worked hard. He's not the biggest, strongest or fastest kid, but he worked to get the starting position and he's making plays for us so that's nice to see."

The Rough Riders return to the field when they take on Kalani (1-3 overall, 1-2 league) Saturday at Kaiser Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

Female Athlete of the Week: Bailey Choy, Iolani volleyball
It's not often that teams other than Kamehameha win at Kekuhaupio Gym on the Kapalama Heights campus, but Iolani did just that, coming out on top of the 16-team Hawaii Volleyball Invitational over the weekend.

The Raiders captured the tournament title Saturday with a three-set win over Moanalua. The scores were 25-16, 23-25 and 25-19.

Senior setter Bailey Choy was a main factor in the win, dishing out 30 assists in the championship match.

"That was huge for us in the sense of just having our experience, because the seniors have never really experience the success in that sense," Iolani coach Kainoa Obrey said. "We've always been close and knocked on the door and we almost broke it down in the past, so it's cool for our kids to be on the other side, I guess, of the coin. Our kids are excited about it, our program is excited about it."

The Raiders last appeared in the state tournament in 2007 and have mostly looked up at perennial powers Kamehameha and Punahou, which have combined to win 28 state titles. The last school outside of the Warriors and Buffanblu to claim the crown was Kahuku in 2002, just one year after Iolani's lone state championship in program history in 2001.

"I would say it's not something that we talk about daily, (but) it is something that we are aware of," Obrey said of seven-year state tournament drought. "Instead of coming up short, we were finally on the winning end and it's a good beginning to the year, but the first thing is we've got to get through our league to even think about states. Getting to play better teams in the state early on helps and it's nice to get some exposure and early success against them. Of course, our goal is to win the (Interscholastic League of Honolulu) and get that opportunity to be the state tournament and then, of course, to win the state championship."

Choy, a fourth-year varsity member who is in her second year as the team's starting setter, will play a vital role to any success the Raiders might come by this season.

"She saw some time on the court as a freshman and her playing time has gradually increased," Obrey said. "This is her second year as a captain for us. She's not overly vocal, but just the way she goes about doing her things is a good example for the others. We have a bunch of seniors and they feed off of each other and they want to compete. Bailey and a couple others are ultra competitive and they bring that to practices, which makes it fun."

Obrey praised Choy's ability to make the best of any situation.

"The plus about Bailey is she makes not-so-great passes look good," Obrey said. "She covers her range as a setter, which is helpful to our system and our offense. She's able to locate most passes and can pretty much anything from anywhere and that's nice. She makes good decisions, she's very intelligent, has a high volleyball IQ and she's almost like an assistant coach on the court."

Choy has already verbally committed to play at the University of Utah next year.

"She's one of the special ones," Obrey said. "We're very fortunate to have a player like that come through our program and I think Utah will be a great opportunity for her."

Choy recorded 28 assists in a straight-set win over Maryknoll in the ILH opener for both teams Monday night. The Raiders return to the court when they visit Mid-Pacific (0-1) Saturday afternoon.
