Punahou's Stanley, Campbell's Anguay lead top performers

Male Athlete of the Week: Wil Stanley, Punahou volleyball
Wil Stanley picked a nice time to break out Saturday night.

The 6-foot-4 junior setter/opposite went off for 16 kills with 10 digs, five blocks and 25 assists to help Punahou to its fourth consecutive Division I state championship with a four-set win over Kamehameha-Hawaii at the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Arena.

"I thought  probably played one of his most complete matches of the year," Buffanblu coach Rick Tune said. "He was active more than he usually is defensively in the back row. He usually puts up a real solid block for us and usually does a nice job of setting th ball, but he was more aggressive picking up tip coverage and his swings, too."

Tune said Stanley struggled to stay healthy due to a nagging abdominal muscle strain.

"We tried to manage his swings and try to strike a balance between getting him healthy and having him on the court and doing what he could do," Tune said. "I thought at the end of the season he showed what he could do. He's a really multi-dimensional player."

Stanley comes from a strong lineage of volleyball players. His father, John, competed in the '68 Games, and his older brother, Clay,
has played in three Olympiads ('04, '08, '12).

"It doesn't get much better than his pedigree," Tune said. "When you've got two Olympians in the family that's a tremendous amount of volleyball knowledge. I think sometimes it's hard for  because he looks at those two big shadows and the bar is set pretty high, so sometimes I think  is his own worst critic and he takes thing tough. He's developing into a different player than his dad and brother, and a pretty good one at that."

Stanley also had a solid game in a sweep over King Kekaulike in Friday's semifinal round. He had 10 kills, 15 assists, six digs, two blocks and an ace against Na Alii. Stanley was one of five Buffanblu players named to the All-Tournament Team.

Tune said Stanley's value to the team is his versatility.

"We can't replace  with one player; We would have to replace him with multiple players," Tune said. "He can do a lot of different things for us and he's able to switch between those gears pretty effortlessly. He's able to go from setter to hitter — and that's not an easy move to make — but he's been doing that for two years now and we think he's doing a great job, obviously."

Part of the rehabilitation from the injury was getting over a mental block, as well.

"When you've got an injury like that, you're thinking about it all the time and with every swing, you're gauging it," Tune said. "It just affects your rhythm and it's hard to push and go 100 percent because you're always anticipating the moment you're going to tweak it and it's pretty painful. We wanted to get to the point where he didn't have to think about it, where he could just play loose and free and that wasn't until pretty late in the season."

Stanley's injury was just the tip of the iceberg for Punahou, which faced its share of adversity despite a perfect record.

"Eighteen-and-(zero) never really tells the story," Tune said. "The story is way deeper and way more difficult than it looks. I think every season has massive challenges and this season was no different. We probably had only two or three guys on the roster that were healthy the whole season. Some guys weren't healthy the whole season. We didn't have a good run of health — it was like sudoku in the lineup and continuity was nearly impossible. We're just lucky that the last three or four weeks of the season everybody got back and we were able to build some continuity."

Stanley is one of 15 potential returnees next season for the Buffanblu, who  lose just two seniors (Miah Maa and JB Kam) to graduation this spring.

"Wil is a great guy," Tune said. "He's really respectful, he's really hard-working, he's really fun-loving and he's very caring and sensitive. He's just a great kid to be around."

Female Athlete of the Week: Nashlynn Anguay, Campbell softball
Nashlynn Anguay has a special knack for knowing what to say at just the right time.

The senior center fielder, a four-year starter on the Campbell softball team, was a big part of the reason the Sabers' won four games in as many days en route to their second state championship in school history and first since 2010.

Anguay, who hits third in the batting order, batted .533 (8 for 15) with five runs and five RBI in four state-tournament games last week. She opened the tournament with a 3-for-4 day in a 6-1 first-round win over Leilehua Tuesday and followed by going 2 for 4 with a home run in a one-run quarterfinal win over tournament third-seed Baldwin Wednesday. Anguay singled in a 7-1 semifinal win over second-seeded Kamehameha in a semifinal Thursday and wrapped up her tournament with a 2-for-3 night with a double, three runs, three RBI and a walk in Friday's 16-4 rout of Mililani in the title game.

"Nashlynn did a great job for us this whole tournament," Campbell coach Shag Hermosura said. "I had her in the middle of the lineup, but we kind of tweaked the lineup and as long as she was doing well, we decided to move (Elisa) Favela down from the third spot to put less pressure on her when she's pitching and put Nashlynn up in the lineup and she just keeps either hitting the ball in play to move the runners over or get a hit."

Hermosura's switch in the lineup proved beneficially for both Anguay and Favela, who hit a first-inning grand slam and a three-run homer in the second Friday.

Favela, a junior pitcher, went 3-1 with a save and pitched 20 innings last week and was named the Most Outstanding Player. Anguay was joined by junior second baseman Cydney Curran and junior designated player Sierra Mariano on the All-Tournament Team.

Hermosura said Anguay, one of just three outgoing seniors for the Sabers, was always an effective motivator for her teammates.

"Among the three seniors she would show a lot of leadership," Hermosura said. "She would push, but push in the right now. She would tell them to learn from their mistakes, as we tell them in practice, and to not get down on yourself. She's grown up a lot, in that respect."

Anguay, who will play for Chaminade University next year, likes to keep things loose.

"She always jokes and off the field she's a clown, but I think she'll be one of the big leaders over there (Chaminade)," Hermosura said. "It's just the way she plays, her body language in practice — she likes to take action — she wants to get in more ground balls, more fly balls, get more time in the cage and in school she'll push the girls to do their best because we're counting on them."

Hermosura said Anguay is looked up to by her peers because she is able to get the message across without having to put anyone down.

"She's coaching herself and the girls under her, too, and she understands that she cannot be too hard on a girl, but she's always pushing them in the right way," Hermosura said. "She has a real knack of doing that and as a coach, you're happy to hear that kind of stuff because you're always trying to instill character in an athlete and that character came through. I love that girl."

Anguay hit safely in all but six of Campbell's 19 regular- and post-season games this year. She posted a .385 batting average with 20 hits, 19 runs and 12 RBI.

"She knew where she wanted to go and what she wanted to do after softball for college, she worked hard academically and at practice she was always showing action and helping the next person," Hermosura said. "She picks them up. She's a really good person. She has a lot of character and she's matured in the four years I've had her. At first, she was like this little kid and she was intimidated by the older girls, but boy, that went by fast, because she quickly became a leader."
