Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) outscored Lexington Catholic (Lexington, Ky.), 30 to 17 in the second half to rally past the Knights, 57-49 in the quarterfinals in the Iolani Classic on Thursday night. The Dragons are currently ranked 11th in the USA Today Super 25 Rankings.

"Anytime you have eight seniors on the team, you expect them to be resilient and handle adversity. They came in and said ‘hey, be patient, don't get upset, and stay the course' and that's what they did," said Bishop O'Dowd coach Lou Richie.

The Dragons had four players scoring in double figures. Guards Paris Austin led Bishop O'Dowd with 16 points and Austin Walker added 15 points and four steals. 6-foot-11 forward Ivan Rabb had 11 points and 12 rebounds and Jeevin Sandhu chipped in 10 points.

To open the first quarter, both teams traded 3-point shots. The Knights were able to pull away as they took a 17-10 lead after the first.

Lexington Catholic used a 7-0 run to start the second quarter after Walker Boothe made a reverse layup as he was fouled. His free throw made it 24 -10. Paris Austin hit back-to-back 3's to cut the deficit to 10, 26-16.

"They did a good job on Ivan and it was our kids having the confidence to play without getting him the ball and working the offense so we could get some layups on the other side," said Richie.

The Dragons shot 3 of 20 from the 3-point line, Austin went 2 of 10, while Walker went 1 of 5.

"I think Paris struggled shooting. but came back in the second half and got us into stuff and made passes and played defense, that's what we needed him to do," said Richie.

After trailing the whole first half, the Dragons opened up the third on a 10-2 run to take a 37-34 lead after Ivan Rabb made a shot in the paint. Lexington Catholic's Reese Ryan made the layup and converted the 3-point play after he was fouled to tie the game back up at 37. Boothe made the layup to make it 43-42 heading into the fourth.

"We talked about their matchup zone and if we flatten them out, they have to stay up in a 2-3 or flatten it out in a 1-4 which would allow us the opportunity to penetrate and make a decision on the weak side. That's what we did and our kids to their credit and we talked about their resiliency and their patience," said Richie, on offensive adjustments.

Tanner Johnson, who scored 31 points against Saint Louis on Monday's opening round game, was held to 10 points and sank two 3's. Michael Talabott scored 10 points before fouling out and Boothe scored a team-high 12 points.

"We talked about changing defenses. Clearly they did a good job executing against our man-to-man so we wanted to put them in a situation where they weren't going against a man-to-man, they couldn't get their best player the ball. They missed some 3's and we got some run outs and got some momentum going," said Richie.

It was a tight fourth quarter as O'Dowd took a 53-47 lead after Rabb blocked a shot and Austin Walker made a fast break layup, and the Knights called a timeout. Paris Austin tweaked his ankle, but toughed it out. The Dragons went 4 of 6 from the free throw line down the stretch, including two from Austin. Lexington Catholic missed three 3-point attempts toward the end and the Dragons held on for the win.

"We gauged it off of him, of course we wanted him in there. He was able to go back in there, handle the ball and make free throws and that's what we expect from him," said Richie, on Austin's ankle injury.

Bishop O'Dowd will play Orange Lutheran on Friday in the semifinals at approximately 6:30 p.m.

"I think we haven't played very well starting either game. Whether it's the jet lag or us overlooking our opponent, we talked about that tonight and we have to figure out. We have to have a better start, especially against Orange Lutheran tomorrow, if we don't we'll be done real quick," said Richie.
