Mililani's Wilson, Pearl City's Morishige lead weekly honors

Male Athlete of the Week: Kainoa Wilson, Mililani football
After earning All-Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West honors the past two seasons, Mililani slotback Kainoa Wilson was hoping for a fast start to 2014.

Wilson, a 5-foot-10, 170-pound senior, picked up this year where he left off with a two-touchdown performance in the Trojan's season-opening 63-47 win over Saint Louis, but he paid the price in doing so. Wilson sustained a collarbone injury against the Crusaders that ultimately kept him out of the next six games.

In his return Friday, Wilson proved to be a pivotal part of the offensee, hauling in seven passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns — all before halftime — as Mililani defeated Kaiser, 54-14 at the Trojans' John Kauinana Stadium.

"It was good to be back out here. I feel blessed," said Wilson, whose scores came on passes of 13 and 66 yards from quarterback McKenzie Milton. "I've been itching to play since the Saint Louis game when I got injuries. I'm just blessed with this opportunity."

Milton, who threw for 288 yards on 15-of-18 passing against the Cougars, found Wilson several times on his second or third progression.

"A couple of times it was great reads by McKenzie," Trojans' coach Rod York said. "Kainoa was the number two, number three read and boom, (Milton) popped it out and Kainoa runs great routes and he got him the ball."

The timing of Wilson's return coincided with the absence of leading receiver Kalakaua Timoteo, who did not play Friday with a shoulder injury. Timoteo has caught 33 passes for 706 yards and five touchdowns.

"It was unfortunate for Kala, but I didn't want to add more pressure on myself that I had to come back and prove something," Wilson said. "I just wanted to come back and play and that's all; just help my team get the win."

As a sophomore Wilson caught 45 passes for 600 yards with five touchdowns and followed that up with 26 grabs for 447 yards and four touchdowns as a junior last year. He earned second-team All-Red West distinction both years.

"He's a three-year starter, he's a senior, he's our captain and he did what we needed him to do (against Kaiser)," York said.

To be sure, Milton is excited to have his sure-handed slotback back on the field as the Trojans look to defend their league title.

"He was a bit nervous to take that first hit, but he did awesome (Friday)," Milton said of Wilson. "I know he was looking forward to it and I'm pretty sure he was satisfied with the way he played."

Mililani, the No. 2 team in the ScoringLive/OC16 Division I Football Power Rankings, can move one step closer to a return trip to the state final with a win over seventh-ranked Campbell in an OIA semifinal game Thursday at Aloha Stadium.

Kickoff between the Trojans (9-0) and Sabers (7-2) is set for 5:30 p.m.

Female Athlete of the Week: Chelsi Morishige, Pearl City bowling
Despite winning the individual state championship as a sophomore last year, Pearl City's Chelsi Morishige had her sights set on another prize heading into this season: a league title.

Morishige, a junior for the reigning state champion Chargers, achieved that goal Thursday when she captured her first Oahu Interscholastic Association crown at the Schofield Bowling Center. She rolled a six-game total of 1,228 pins to finish 38 ahead of teammate Ashlynn Castro. The Chargers finished better than 500 pins ahead of second-place Mililani to win their fourth straight team title.

"I was not surprised that she won because she has really, really improved her game since last year," Pearl City coach Millie Gomes said. "She's really grown and matured, because she was calm and didn't let other people get in her head. She was nervous, I'm sure, but she did a good job of overcoming that. I'm so proud of her."

At the same event last year, Morishige was leading the pack, but wasn't able to hang on and fell to third place.

"She kind of let that lead go," Gomes recalled. "It definitely motivated her this year, but Thursday she said 'Let's not talk about it, coach,' so she got past it at some point and just let it go — kind of like when you miss a spare you have to just move on — so I think she's become a bit more confidence because she knows she can do it and she was really cool headed (Thursday)."

The victory didn't come without struggle for Morishige, who trailed Leilehua freshman Gwen Maeha after four games.

"She was at 598 after three games and (Maeha) was at 600, but she stayed steady all the way after falling off the totem poll and giving it away last year," Gomes said of Morishige. "I told her to make them earn it and that she's the person to beat so the only person that can beat her is herself. She took that into consideration and it's made her more of a strong-minded person and toughened up her game."

Morishige, a member of the junior bowling league at Leeward Bowl, placed 19th as a freshman at the state tournament before capturing the state crown with a nine-game total of 1,747 pins last year. Gomes said Morishige rolled a perfect 300 game over the summer.

Gomes said Morishige's competitiveness was apparent from the time she joined the team three years ago.

"When she first started as a freshman, she used to like to practice with the boys and she didn't like to practice with the girls because she's so competitive, but she's humble at the same time," Gomes said. "What's interesting is she's able to converse with others, it's not like she doesn't want anybody bothering her if she's bowling well — because I would be like that — but she sits with the girls and cheers with them. She's really got great focus and determination."

Pearl City has won the last three team state championships — all under Gomes — and 10 in school history.

The Billy Tees/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Bowling State Championships will be held Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 at KBXtreme in Kona.
