EWA BEACH - Running back Terell Johnson rushed for 130 yards and three touchdowns and Solomon Matautia returned a punt 75 yards for a score and No. 7 Campbell rambled by undermanned Waipahu, 56-0, Friday night.

The Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I tournament first-round game was played before a sparse crowd at the Sabers' field. There appeared to be more band members from each school than spectators. It was the public schools' fall-term break this past week.

The Sabers (6-2) will meet No. 7 Leilehua (6-1) at Hugh Yoshida Stadium either Friday or next Saturday. The Mules own a 27-9 edge on the Sabers. The Marauders (1-7) ended their season by suiting up 31 players from a roster that lists 49.

It was 28-0 by the end of the first quarter and 49-0 at the half. The second half started with the mercy-rule running clock. The Sabers added their final score in the fourth quarter.

Turnovers - three interceptions (two by Matautia and one by Walter Varde III) and two fumbles - set up five of Campbell's eight TDs.

It was an uphill climb for the Marauders, who lost players to academics and injuries, coach Eric Keola said.

"From the get go you could see we were out-matched physically," he said. "Basically, we're on the field, we're not match. It boils down to we're going to play with what we got."

Starting quarterback Blaise DeAsis was sick this past week and played only in the second half. Gavin Marques started and struggled against the Sabers' defense, which got four interceptions (three off Marques) and three sacks.

The fall term break did not help the Marauders either, as some players missed workouts.

"It's a tough motivation to see (that you're) playing the three seed," Keola said.

Coming off the loss to Farrington the previous week, the Sabers had no motivational issues.

"What I liked was how we prepared this week," Campbell coach Amosa Amosa said. "We were focused (but) I know Waipahu that didn't have the numbers to play."

Campbell's offense cut through the Marauders like a Cane Knife, the perpetual trophy played for by the two schools once surrounded by the sugar cane fields. The scoring came quickly, as the Sabers found the end zone three times within first five minutes of the game.

Running back Austin May scored on a 4-yard run on Campbell's first series.

Following a sack by Tyson Tafai that forced a fumble that Isaac Kelly recovered, the Sabers scored on a 26-yard TD pass Ezra Savea to Jayce Bantolina.

Matautia then returned a punt 75 yards to make it 21-0 at the 7:10 mark in the first quarter.

Matautia's first of two interceptions came at the Sabers' 5. It was recycled into Johnson's 20-yard TD run to make it 28-0.

The Marauders lost the ball on downs at the Campbell 14, but the Sabers drove down the field easily. A 36-yard pass from Savea to Javal Medlin was followed by Johnson's 25-yard TD run.

Waipahu's ensuing series was stalled by Varde's interception at the Waipahu 39. After a loss of four yards on first down, Johnson raced 43 yards for a TD to make it 42-0.

Matautia's second interception came at the Waipahu 5. Four plays later, backup QB Anthony Pablo scored on a 6-yard run to make it 49-0 at the half.

Pablo was intercepted by Joshua Togiai early in the fourth quarter, but the Marauders gave it back with a fumble to set up Jenesus Tago-Sue's 8-yard TD run to cap the Sabers' scoring.

The Sabers, who usually pass the ball, did not need to. Savea passed only nine times and was lifted before the half. Pablo threw only five passes and pretty much kept the ball on the ground.

Next up for the Sabers is Leilehua. They will have to contend with QB Kalanimoku Pauole, who has passed for 1,735 yards and 26 TDs. He once was the QB for Campbell's JV, Amosa said.

"He's doing a good job distributing the ball," Amosa said. "We're going to have to be ready, bring our 'A' game to have a chance to compete against these guys."
