WAIPAHU - Multi-talented Stanton Spencer scored 19 points and Waianae dominated Waipahu, 43-0, Friday night at the Masa Yonamine Athletic Complex.

Spencer, a receiver and place kicker, caught two touchdown passes, kicked a 37-yard field goal and made four PATs to help the Seariders improve to 4-2 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I Red. They close the regular season next Saturday at Aloha Stadium against Kahuku (5-1) in a game that has a major bearing on the seedings for the 12-team OIA Division I tournament.

The Marauders (1-6) had their regular season on homecoming. They will gain a postseason berth with a Castle (1-5) win over McKinley (0-6). If the Tigers win, the three will be tied for fifth and one of them will be eliminated from qualifying for the tournament by virtue of a coin toss.

Waianae basically controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage against Waipahu. The Seariders had a moderate 358 yards of offense with their bread-and-butter runs mixed with an occasional but efficient passing. Half of their six completions went for TDs. Defensively, the Seariders held the Marauders to 61 yards. Niko Kala-Mahiai had an interception and Jaylen Gonzales had a sack.

"I'm happy for the offense," Waianae coach Dan Matsumoto said. "I'm glad to see us move the ball. Their No. 4 (LB Jacob Anae), their linebacker is mean. We knew he was going to give us problems and he did. I'm just glad we were able to convert on third down and keep the ball moving."

Waianae had 15 first downs, 10 by rushing. By contrast, Waipahu had just three first downs; it did not get its first until the third quarter. The Marauders took just 36 snaps to the Seariders' 55.

Ioane Kaluhiokalani threw TD passes of 32 yards to Spencer in the first quarter and 6 yards to Justice Jardine in the second. Starting QB Jorell Pontes only pass of the game was the 24-yard TD to Spencer late in the third quarter. Kaluhiokalani did not start for disciplinary reasons, Matsumoto said; but he missed only the first two plays from scrimmage before entering the game. Pontes, though, did play the whole second half.

But the night belonged to Spencer.

"It's for my team," Spencer said. "If they dominate, I can dominate, too. "

His TD receptions, from two different QBs no less, were nice. But his field goal was centered and strong through the uprights.

"I just keep my eyes down and look up after," he said.

Kaluhiokalani did damage through the air and ground. He completed 5 of 11 passes for 83 yards and rushed for 75 on just five carries.

Running back John Barbieto was the busiest Searider, carrying the ball 12 times for 67 yards, including a five-yard TD run.
