KAPALAMA HEIGHTS — Division I No. 4 Kamehameha upended Division II No. 10 Damien, 33-6, in an Interscholastic League of Honolulu matchup at Kamehameha’s Kunuiakea Stadium on Thursday night. The Warriors improve to 3-0 overall, 2-0 in the ILH, while the Monarchs fall to 1-3 overall, 0-3 in the ILH.

Jordan Bayudan led the way for the Warriors with 10 carries for 64 yards and three touchdowns.

“Jordan’s been stepping up and been getting better and making people miss and he has a lot of ability and he just needs to get more carries and more reps and keep improving. This position will be by committee, Kaysan Nakatsu hyperextended his knee and took the week off, he’ll be back next week and he’s a big part of what we do with the run game,” said Kamehameha coach Doug Cosbie.

“It was the linemen that helped me a lot and allowed the push and created holes for me to take advantage of,” said Bayudan.

Fatu Sua-Godinet went 13-of-20 passing for 188 yards and a touchdown and the Warriors had 356 yards of net offense.

“We’re trying to develop the passing game and the more balanced we could be, the better we’ll be on offense the strength of this team is our defense. If our offense can get more consistent, we’ll be a lot better. We got to get cleaner execution, our o-line needs to step up and play a little better. We had several holding penalties from basically being lazy. Those penalties really hurt us on our drives, but some inexperience on the line they’re getting better and starting to gel but we got to keep working on it,” said Cosbie, whose team was penalized 12 times for 83 yards.

After Damien went three-and-out, Kamehameha drove 75-yards in 1 minute 18 seconds for the first score of the game. Fatu Sua-Godinet threw a 44-yard pass to Kumoku Noa to set up first-and-goal on the Damien 7-yard line, and Jordan Bayudan ran it for a touchdown.

Following Dayton Dano’s interception, the Warriors converted the turnover into points as Noah Crabbe kicked a 26-yard field goal and on the kickoff, Uakea Silva-Grace recovered it on the Damien 21-yard line. In three plays, Sua-Godinet threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Alika Kahaulelio and Crabbe’s kick made it, 17-0 with 8:50 to go in the second quarter.

Kamehameha’s defense stepped up and recovered two fumbles and intercepted Dallas Labanon twice. Wesley Faagau and Michael Mahuka each had fumble recoveries and Dayton Dano and Akili Gray each had interceptions.

“They gave us some short fields and it makes it a little easy on us,” said Cosbie.

Michael Mahuka recovered a fumble on the Damien 2-yard line and Bayudan added his second rushing touchdown to make it, 23-0 with 3:56 remaining in the half.

The Monarchs responded after Kepono Kawaakoa rushed for a 77-yard touchdown to make it, 23-6.

In the second half, Bayudan ran it in for a 1-yard touchdown, his third of the night and Crabbe kicked a 29-yard field goal, his second of the game, to put the Warriors up, 33-6.

“Even though we’re undefeated, there are a lot of things we need to work on especially, with the offense so we have to go back to practice and go back to the drawing board to prepare to do better for our next game,” said Bayudan.

Kamehameha will take on No. 8 Saint Louis at Aloha Stadium on Sept. 20 at 7:30 pm while Damien plays Saint Francis at 11:30 AM on the same day.
