Kalanimoku Pauole passed for 318 yards and four touchdowns and No. 10 Leilehua rolled Kailua, 50-7, Saturday night at Hawaiian Airlines Field at Aloha Stadium.

With last weekend's cancelations because of Hurricane Iselle, the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I cross-over game served as the season opener for both teams. The result counts in the regular-season standings for the Red Division Mules (1-0) and the Blue Division Surfriders (0-1).

"We came out a little flat," Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda said. "Definitely, we needed another game, but the weather (hurricane) hurt us a little bit. We started off rusty. They did what they needed to do. They came out, played hard, executed the plays."

Pauole, who was 10 of 17 with an interception that was returned for Kailua's only score by Clifton Rodrigues, had TD passes of 66 and 67 yards to Toma Savea, 41 yards to Randy Neverson and 74 yards to Tyreek Keough. He started off completing one of his first four throws before completing four in a row, including two TDs.

"I was a little shaky with my reads at first," Pauole said. "As soon as I got it down, everything started to go really well. But I give credit to the linemen. If it wasn't for them, I wouldn't be able to get my passes out."

Running back Ikaika Piceno led the ground game with 122 yards on 11 carries, including an electrifying 66-yard TD with eight minutes, 16 seconds left in the third quarter that made it 44-7 and started the 35-point differential mercy rule running clock. Piceno also scored on a 2-yard run in the second quarter.

It was Leilehua's ability to run the ball that helped open the passing game for Pauole.

"The running game gives Kalani (Pauole) more options when (opponents) have to stack the box to stop Ikaika Pinceno, Randy Neverson. They have to put eight guys in the box and that gave us the one-on-one (with the receivers)."

It was a rough coaching debut for Kailua's Hauoli Wong, the 1994 Kailua alumnus and former University of Hawaii and Brigham Young offensive lineman, as well as a 1999 NFL draft pick by the Miami Dolphins.

"Assignment-wise hurt us," Wong said. "No discredit to Leilehua. Great team. We'll roll with it, correct our mistakes and come back next week."

It does not get easier for Kailua, which will visit No. 2 Mililani, while Leilehua will host McKinley next weekend.

Leilehua punted after its first series and lost a fumble on its second possession at the Kailua 2. The Mules' defense kept the Surfriders inside the 10 and a high-snap from center in punt formation resulted in a safety and an Leilehua lead of 2-0 with 4:20 left in the first quarter.

Leilehua fumbled the ensuing free kick, but Kailua went nowhere against the Mules' defense. After Kailua lost the ball on downs at the Leilehua 34, Pauole hit Savea on a pass near midfield, but the defender slipped and Savea was able to complete the 66-yard pass play for the first TD of the game.

After Pauole's 41-yard TD pass to Neverson to make it 17-0 early in the second quarter, the defense came up with a sack and fumble at the Kailua 37, setting up Piceno's 2-yard TD run to make it 23-0.

Leilehua's Charles Watson had an interception on Kailua's next series. But the Surfriders had one of their own when Rodrigues returned a Pauole pass 49 yards to pull Kailua to 23-7.

But Leilehua widened its lead with two Pauole TD passes to make it 38-7 at the half.
