A pair of neighbor island teams drew the top seeds in the Hawaiian Airlines/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Girls Basketball State Championships.
In the Division I bracket, Maui Interscholastic League champion Lahainaluna is the No. 1 seed. Konawaena, the Big Island Interscholastic Federation titlist and reigning state runner-up is the second seed, Interscholastic League of Honolulu champ Punahou is the third seed and Oahu Interscholastic Association winner Roosevelt is the No. 4 seed. All four teams have a first-round bye and play their first game of the 12-team tournament Saturday under the new regional format.
First-round games get underway on Oahu Friday with doubleheaders at Moanalua and McKinley high schools.
Honokaa, the BIIF champion drew the top seed in the Division II tournament. ILH-champ Hawaii Baptist is the second seed, OIA-titlist Farrington is the third seed and MIL-winner Molokai is the No. 4 seed. Kalani and Kaimuki High Schools will host the the first three days of the tournament before the action moves over to the Neal S. Blaisdell Center Saturday. The D2 championship will be played at 7 p.m. that day and will follow a pair of D1 regional finals at 3 and 5 p.m.
