MPI sweeps 'Iolani, 11-1

Justin Protacio went 4 for 4 with three RBIs, Marcus Doi went 3 for 4 with four RBIs and Lawrence Chew pitched a four-hitter Saturday as Mid-Pacific routed visiting 'Iolani, 11-1, to sweep their three-game Interscholastic League of Honolulu baseball series.

A crowd of about 150 at Damon Field watched the Owls improve to 6-0 in the ILH and maintain sole possession of first place, a half-game ahead of second-place Saint Louis (5-0).

MPI dominated the series against 'Iolani, winning 10-1, 13-3 and 11-1.

The Owls jumped out to an early 3-0 lead Saturday, starting the bottom of the first inning with a double by Protacio, a run-scoring single by Nik Alarcio, Doi's RBI double, a sacrifice bunt by Dane Fujinaka and Travis Garcia-Perreira's run-scoring groundout.

They added a run in the second when Daniel Fentriss led off with a double, advanced to second on Justin Motoi's sacrifice bunt and scored on a single by Protacio. Mid-Pacific then capitalized on errors to score single runs in the third and fourth innings to make it 6-0.

The Raiders broke through in the fifth after Corey Gokan led off with a single to left field, advanced to third on Westin Fabro's groundout to second and scored on Tiras Koon's double to right-center.

But the Owls answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth, sparked by Protacio's two-run triple down the left-field line and Doi's two-run double to right-center. MPI then won by 10-run rule in the sixth after Cy Higashi was hit by a pitch with one out, stole second and scored on an outfield error after Fentriss singled to left.

Protacio scored three times and stole two bases, and Fentriss went 2 for 3. Koon went 2 for 2 to lead 'Iolani.
