Noah Kubo had himself a week to remember.
The Mid-Pacific senior collected eight hits over three games – all of them wins – and turned in his best pitching performance of the season to help the Owls keep pace in a crowded Interscholastic League of Honolulu race.
In victories over Damien, Iolani and PAC-5, Kubo combined to hit 8 for 12 with nine runs batted in. The 5-foot-8, 170-pound catcher/pitcher is sporting a .387 batting average. He is tied for the fifth most hits in ILH play, while his 14 RBI leads the league.
"For some that's a whole career," Mid-Pacific coach Dunn Muramaru quipped.
Kubo's hot week started off with a 3-for-4 effort in last Tuesday's 7-2 win over Damien. He singled in his first at-bat and flied out to center in his second before he led off the bottom of the fifth inning with a solo home run over the fence in center field. Kubo's dinger answered the pair of runs the Monarchs scored in the prior half-inning. He finished off the day with a two-out single to right field that plated two more runs for the Owls, who led 6-2 at that point.
In Thursday's 8-4 win over then-No. 4 Iolani, Kubo had himself a four-hit day, including three-RBI triple that gave his team a 4-2 lead late in the contest. Kubo, who hits in the three-hole, batted 4 for 5 against the Raiders, with all four of his hits coming with two outs, including his RBI-single in his final at-bat that stretched the Mid-Pacific lead to 8-4.
"That's him just clutching up," Muramaru said. "Two-out hits is what everybody looks for."
Kubo moved from behind the plate to the pitcher's mound for Saturday's 8-2 win over PAC-5. He pitched into the seventh inning and allowed two runs on three hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Kubo registered 53 of his 91 total pitches for strikes. He retired 12 of the first 14 batters he faced, including striking out the side in the bottom of the second inning, until he ran into some trouble in the fifth.
The Wolfpack got back-to-back one-out singles from a pair of pinch hitters before Kubo issued a four-pitch walk to load the bases. He gave up another single to score PAC-5's first run of the game, but Kubo was able to induce a comebacker that initiated a inning-ending double play to limit the damage.
Muramaru took ownership of the lone run Kubo allowed in the frame.
"That was my fault because I moved the first baseman back and the guy dribbled the ball and they ended up scoring, so that was my fault, but we were up so I didn't want a hard-hit ball to get by him," Muramaru explained.
On the double play, Kubo threw home to get the first out before the catcher Laakea Inglis snapped a throw to first baseman Adam Kobayashi to finish off the double play.
"Bases loaded and the leadoff hitter was up, so yeah, that was a big pitch and a big play because we were kind of cruising along, the score was six-zero at that point and you never know with PAC-5. I mean, they had just beat Iolani, so a couple of hits and the score would have been a lot closer," Muramaru pointed out.
Kubo then set the Wolfpack down in order in the bottom of the sixth inning. He improved to 2-1 on the year and lowered his earned run average to 2.32, the eighth-best mark among ILH pitchers with at least 10 innings of work.
"Basically he just throws strikes and gets ahead (in the count). I mean, he's nothing special but he gets ahead and that's all we ask. If gets ahead then he's not predictable. In high school if you're not predictable you'll be successful, so he gets ahead and can throw all three pitches for strikes and that's why he's effective, but that's like any pitcher," Muramaru said.
Kubo's arsenal includes a fastball, curveball and a change-up. Muramaru noted that Kubo hasn't logged very many innings in years past.
"He hardly pitched in previous years. We were kind of forced to have him pitch this year," Muramaru said. "For Noah, he has to play two positions – he has to pitch and catch – which is probably the two most demanding positions and he's done a really good job, so I give him props for that. He's basically our primary catcher, but this year he's having to do both. We had to bring up some JV guys, so he basically has to catch every inning that he doesn't pitch."
While his experience behind the plate may serve him well as a pitcher – "He has a better idea as far as understanding the situations and what's needed," Muramaru noted – it also means twice the work and preparation for the third-year varsity member and second-year starter.
"He just works extra," Muramaru said. "He always does his catching drills and then he does his running after, so he puts in a lot of extra work. He works hard. Everybody respects him on our team and it comes from just the work ethic."
In addition to his pitching duties Saturday, Kubo drove in a pair of runs with his two-out, sixth-inning single that stretched the Owls' lead to 8-1.
Muramaru did not mince his words about the type of week that Kubo put together.
"He basically won all those games for us," the longtime coach said of the Iowa Western-signee.
Prior to last week, Mid-Pacific had lost three of its previous four games, including back-to-back losses to Kamehameha and Maryknoll. Entering Tuesday, the Owls sat in a three-way tie with No. 3 Iolani and No. 2 Saint Louis for second place, with all three teams one-half game behind first place – and top-ranked – Kamehameha.
"The ILH is about matchups and so it's just so tough. I mean, there's no other league where there are no breathers in the whole league and the kids know that. They know that it's never going to be an easy game and that's good because we don't have to worry about motivating them because it's just such a tough league," Muramaru said.
Kubo batted 2 for 2 with two walks and an RBI to help Mid-Pacific to a 5-3 win over Punahou Tuesday afternoon.
The Owls (8-3) will host Kamehameha Wednesday at Damon Field. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Often times statistics don't tell the whole story. In the case of Piimoku Victorino, however, they're pretty telling indeed.
Victorino, a senior slugger and team captain for the Molokai softball team, is off to a blistering hot start this spring. The 5-foot-8 third-year starter for the Farmers has put together an astronomical .889 batting average with eight hits in nine at-bats and 14 runs scored. Victorino has driven in 18 runs and swatted five home runs and has done all of this in just four games.
Molokai coach Kalei Pastrana isn't surprised in the least by Victorino's torrid start to the season.
"It's typical for Piimoku. She always brings that intensity to the game and no matter where you put her, she excels at every single position. She's someone you can count on no matter where you place her and the great thing about her is when you ask what position she wants to play, her answer is always, ‘Coach, I'll go where you need,' " Pastrana said.
Victorino has played nearly every position in the infield, including pitcher, but her primary position is at third base.
"She can go anywhere," Pastrana added.
He noted that Victorino owns the highest softball IQ on the team and has years of experience playing club ball for Maui No Ka Oi.
"She's definitely the strongest on the team, the most experienced on the team, the most athletic and has the most knowledge of the game and she's definitely the leader of our team," Pastrana said.
Pastrana has been pleased by the leadership that Victorino has displayed over the years.
"She's a great leader. The girls on the team definitely look up to her as a team leader because of her skill and her knowledge and definitely her athleticism, but this year she's brought the team together and she's definitely embraced that role as a team leader. With her leading the team it definitely shows as they play the game, but she definitely stands out," Pastrana expressed.
With her wealth of knowledge – and talent – Victorino has made it a point to serve as a mentor to many of her younger and less experienced teammates.
"She definitely helps out her teammates, especially the new and upcoming ones. She believes that you're only as good as your weakest player, so she definitely tries to bring everyone up to her speed, or as close as she can to it, but she also knows that people grow and learn at their own pace, but she's definitely a big help and is a great role model and gives them encouragement whenever she can. Even if we're down in score, she's constantly picking everyone up," Pastrana said.
Over the weekend, Victorino put together a pair of prolific performances in wins over Hana. In Friday's 25-10 win over the Dragons, Victorino homered twice, including a three-run bomb that was part of a 10-run second inning, and walked twice. She tallied five RBI and four runs scored in the four-inning rout.
"If the pitch is there, she's definitely gonna go after it, but although she's a power hitter, she definitely has the discipline to take pitches and to take the walk at the same time," Pastrana said.
Victorino also pitched the final three innings. She allowed three runs on two hits with strikeouts and five walks to record the win.
The following day, Victorino started the game in the circle and gave up two runs on three hits in 2 2/3 innings of work. She recorded four strikeouts against one walk and was again, the pitcher of record.
"Pii is definitely the stronger pitcher and has the most velocity and movement on her ball. We either utilize her as an opener and if she's doing well we'll keep her in, but we'll also use her as a closer," Pastrana said.
In her pitching repertoire, Victorino possesses a fastball, screw ball, curve, riser and drop ball.
At the plate Saturday, Victorino put on another impressive display of power. The clean-up hitter bashed two more homers – a grand slam in the top of the first inning, followed by a two-run shot in the third – and finished 3 for 4 with seven RBI and four runs scored.
"The opportunity for a grand slam doesn't come up too often, so when it does come you make the best of the pitches and pick the right one, but as much as we celebrate it, the great thing about Pii is she's still humble," Pastrana said.
Victorino has drawn eight walks this year, most of them have been intentional free passes. In a game against Lanai on March 30, Victorino was walked four times. Her lone at-bat that day resulted in a home run.
"I'm sure it was a little frustrating for her, but she knows the discipline of the game and she knows why it happens. It's definitely a respect thing as an opposing coach knowing her power, knowing her ability to swing the bat and to clean up the bases," Pastrana said.
Despite her power, Victorino's approach is far from all or nothing.
"As a coach it gives me confidence knowing that she's in the box. When she comes up to bat she has the confidence and knowledge to bring runners home, but she knows her role as a batter. She can definitely pound the ball, but she can also bunt, she can also squeeze and depending on the situation of the play, whatever signal I give her, I know she can execute whatever we need from her, so I have full confidence in her," Pastrana said.
Victorino, the youngest of three siblings in her household, is also a member of Molokai's girls volleyball and girls basketball teams.
"Family is a big part of her life and she definitely represents her family very well," Pastrana said. "They're great supporters for Piimoku. Whatever sport she plays, they support her 110 percent where she goes."
Victorino and the Lady Farmers (3-1) next play Apr. 19 and 20, when they visit Lanai for a two-game set.
