Moanalua dynasty still reigns supreme at judo championships

Moanalua dominated the field at the Odom Corporation/HHSAA Judo Championships as its boys and girls teams each captured their fourth straight team title Saturday at SimpliFi Arena at Stan Sheriff Center.
With Joshua Estabillo (108) and Teagen Salvador (145) each winning an individual state title in their respective weight class, Na Menehune won their seventh boys state championship overall.
On the girls side, Moanalua took home five individual state titles out of the 10 possible weight classes. Those individual crowns belonged to Taegan Escaba (98), Kayla Shota (109), Kamaile Yasumura (122), Nohi Kukonu (154) and Eden Baguio (172).
Two judoka repeated as state champion and defended their crown in the boys field: Estabillo and Kapolei's Rodstan Salangdron (220). Mid-Pacific's Logan Lau (121) also won his second straight title after moving up from the 114-pound weight class.
Shota was the lone judoka on the girls side that won her second straight title. She defeated Charlotte Campbell of Punahou by Han Soku Make in the 109-pound final.
There were a pair of upsets on Saturday. Roosevelt's Caelin Balansag took down reigning champ Kelly Ann Ichimura (Punahou) in the 115-pound final by Wazari and fourth-seeded Caden Pasa of Kamehameha-Hawaii got the best of last year's 198-pound champion Brady Lee (Moanalua) in a semifinal match. Pasa went on to win the weight class with an Ippon over Roosevelt's Matt Yadao in one minute and 50 seconds.
