MILILANI — After an early 1-0 deficit, the ninth-ranked Trojans (3-1) bounced back to reel off seven unanswered runs to defeat No. 7 Kapolei (1-4), 7-1, in Thursday afternoon's Oahu Interscholastic Association West Division matchup at Mililani High School.

Coming off last week's loss to Leilehua in which Trojans' pitcher Misha Carreira gave up nine hits, six runs and three home runs, the senior ace responded with a full seven innings of work allowing only one run, five hits and zero walks.

"This was one of her better games today," Mililani coach Rose Antonio said. "She looked really comfortable out there today and she mixed it up well."

Carreira's biggest blemish came in the opening frame. After notching two quick outs, she got ahead two strikes in the count but Hurricanes' leading hitter Kiley Ozaki launched a solo shot over the left field fence for what would be Kapolei's lone run of the game.

The Hurricanes threatened again in the top of the second inning getting a leadoff single from Dallas Pollard-Brownell followed by a double from Elora Tonaki to put both runners in scoring position. The next batter flied out to right field with Pollard-Brownell tagging up on the play, but sophomore right fielder Cherise Mori gunned her out at home plate.

Two frames later in the bottom third, Kapolei pitcher Sadie Kapaku-You let up two walks to start the inning. Maya Yoshiura brought them both home with her first of two doubles on the day. She later scored after tagging up on a fly out in foul territory to right field. Mori's two-out single would bring home Merilis Rivera who reached base on balls.

Mililani again remained stiff on defense in the top of the fourth inning. Kapolei got two runners on base but Trojans' third baseman Rivera stuffed a hard groundball, stepped on her bag for the unassisted out and then fired across the diamond for a double play to end the threat.

The Trojans again got it going offensively in the fifth inning with two more runs that started with a leadoff double from Yoshiura.

In the sixth inning, pinch hitter Elizabeth Winchester doubled to bring in their seventh and final run of the game.

"Today at least we cashed it in when we needed it," Antonio said. "We're learning every day and these kids keep working hard and I have no complaints."

For Carreira, it was her third pitching win of the season while Kapaku-You recorded her fourth loss. Kapaku-You gave up four walks, three of which in came in the Trojans' four-run third inning.
