Silva named McKinley football coach

McKinley High graduate Pat Silva confirmed he has been named head football coach at his alma mater.

He succeeds Sam Cantiberos, who coached the team the past two seasons, going 0-8 each year.

Silva coached Roosevelt from 2009 to 2011, compiling a 6-18 record.

Silva, a 1975 graduate of McKinley, led the Tigers to the Oahu Interscholastic Association Eastern Division championship before falling to Waianae in the title game in 1973. Silva, a quarterback, was named OIA East Offensive Player of the Year that season.

Silva said returning to his alma mater to coach football was one of his "bucket list" items.

Silva also officiates high school basketball.
