Mililani tops Kapolei in PKs; Castle holds off Campbell in OIA D1 quarterfinals

Mililani and Castle are moving on to the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I semifinals.

The Trojans edged Kapolei in penalty kicks, 2-1, while the Knights defeated Campbell, 3-1, Tuesday night in the league quarterfinals at John Kauinana Stadium.

Mililani (9-0-2) and Castle (9-1-1) both also clinched a berth into the Division I state tournament, and will take on each other in a 5:30 p.m. semifinal at the Knights' home field on Thursday.

Mililani coach Ray Akiona had high praise for the Hurricanes (6-3-3) after the game.

"They took us to the limit. They found our weaknesses and they made us really work hard to just stay in the game with them. I got to give them credit. They took us to the end on this one and we wish them well as they continue their part of the tournament as well."

The Trojans' Tehani Furuta scored the first goal of the match in the 31st minute before the Hurricanes' Alyssa Yoshida scored the equalizer five minutes later. Both teams were held scoreless through the second half and both overtime periods to leave the outcome of the game to penalty kicks.

Leading the home team in the shootout period was junior goalkeeper Andrea Kenagy, who made three straight saves against the first three kickers she faced.

"She's just got such a great feel for the game," Akiona said on Kenagy. "She's an outstanding goalkeeper so we had a lot of faith in her, but a performance like that you have to say it's exceptional."

With Kenagy in goal, the Trojans were able to take a 2-0 lead after two tries thanks to makes by Tayzha Furuta and Randi Macadangdang. The Hurricanes finally found the back of the net on their fourth kicker, Michele Bonafacio, but Mililani's Karlin Wurlitzer sealed the deal on the fifth try for a 3-1 advantage.

In the first quarterfinal game in Mililani, the Knights' Bethanee Hanaike notched two goals to lead Castle over Campbell. Ciana Rivera also notched a goal for the Knights, her team-leading 16th of the season, while Chardonnay Curran had the lone goal for the Sabers (7-2-3).

Kapolei and Campbell will play in a consolation match at Roosevelt's Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. The winner of this contest will clinch a state berth while the loser will see its season come to an end.
