Molokai outlasts Kohala in five sets

Molokai won a back-and-forth match over Kohala in the first round of the New City Nissan/Hawaii High School Athletic Association Division II Girls Volleyball Championships at Kaimuki's Gymnasium Wednesday evening.

The Farmers won by set scores of 23-25, 25-17, 25-23, 19-25 and 15-9 to advance to take on top-seeded and defending state champion Hawaii Baptist in the second quarterfinal at Kaimuki Thursday night.

Junior outside hitter Shaelyn McCutcheon led Molokai with a match-high 11 kills and one solo block. Brooke Keliihoomalu and Taye Mowat followed with nine kills each while Sehja Pedro chipped in eight kills and three blocks to round out the Farmers' leading hitters.

Shania Fuertes led the Cowgirls in the loss with nine kills and nine digs.
