Waialua staves off Pearl City, 14-12

Led by a pair of 100-yard rushers, Waialua pulled off its biggest win of the season Friday night.

Risein Campbell and Howard Nahooikaika combined for 260 rushing yards and host Waialua held off Pearl City, 14-12, at Toshiyuki Nakasone Stadium.

The Bulldogs improved to 5-2 with the win and secured the No. 3 seed in the upcoming Oahu Interscholastic Association Division II tournament.

The Chargers, who entered the game ranked seventh in the ScoringLive/Hawaiian Electric D2 Power Rankings, fell to 5-3 overall and 5-2 in league play.

Campbell ran for 156 yards on 23 carries — both season-high marks — and Nahooikaika carried 13 times for 104 yards, including a 30-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Waialua went up 14-0 following Tevesi Toia's 12-yard scoring strike to Lancen Kuni with 8:31 left in the third quarter.

Pearl City answered with Isaiah Asinsin's 2-yard TD run just 15 seconds later, but missed the ensuing extra point try.

The Chargers got a 5-yard touchdown pass from Patrick Nunez to Brody Padilla with 7:55 left in the game, but the two-point conversion pass fell incomplete.

A win Friday would have secured the top seed in the four-team OIA tournament for Pearl City. Instead, it fell to the fourth seed and will play No. 1 seed Waipahu in next week's semifinal round. Waialua will take on Kaimuki in the other semifinal.
