KALIHI — Farrington swept Pearl City, 25-21, 25-11, 25-19 in the opening round of the Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I volleyball playoffs at Farrington's Kitamura Gymnasium on Wednesday night.

The third-seeded Lady Govs (10-2 overall, 9-2 league) will travel to play the West's second seed Kapolei (9-1) in the quarterfinals at Kahuku on Thursday, Oct. 13 at 5:30 pm, the first game of a doubleheader. 

"They're a going to be a tough team, they are fundamentally sound and well-coached," said Farrington coach Barney Choy.

Pearl City concludes their season at 4-7 overall, 4-6 league.

Dayna Kahanu had 10 kills and 24 digs, Saryiah Kahakai added 10 kills, and Violet Rae Williams added eight kills to lead the Lady Govs' attack. Chasity Wong had 17 assists to help distribute the ball and Jasmine Lei Santos had 16 digs.

"Chasity did a good job spreading the court and she's the key to our success. She came a long way," said Choy.

Farrington and Pearl City went back-and-forth to tie the game at 16. The Lady Govs started pulling away late in the set thanks to Williams' service aces. Williams and Kahakai combined for nine kills in the first set to win, 25-21.

The momentum and energy used to close out the first set carried over to the second set as Farrington took a commanding 12-2 lead after aces from Chasity Wong and Kohala Solomon to force Pearl City to call timeout.

"We stressed getting some rhythm on court. It was tough in the first set, but they stayed calm," said Choy.

The serving was a big factor as the Lady Govs had seven aces for the game. The Chargers mounted a short rally, but the deficit was too large to overcome as they fell, 25-11.

"The serving, the passing, ball control and defense is what we stressed," said Choy.

Pearl City put it on the line in the third set to tie the game at 12, however, the Lady Govs started pulling away and went on a 7-0 run. The Chargers got within five, 23-18, but Farrington was able to close out the set to complete the sweep.

"It was the serve and pass as well as ball control. We had good set selection and also forced them (Pearl City) into errors," said Choy.

Pearl City contributions from Shirlita Wimberly and Cassidy Essex with five and six kills respectively. Tyra Johnson-Oshiro and Brooke Clymer had 15 digs each.
