Roosevelt's Rayna Miranda scored the game winning goal in sudden death overtime to lift the Rough Riders past Lahainaluna, 10-9, and into the semifinals of the Stanford Carr Development/HHSAA Girls Water Polo State Championship.
About thirty seconds into the sudden death period, Sarah Yasuda found Miranda wide open on the right wing with a kick out pass, and from there Miranda manuevered into the attacking zone for a few seconds before firing a shot past the keeper to end it.
The Rough Riders led 6-3 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Lunas scored three straight goals to tie the score, with the equalizer coming with just over two minutes left in regulation off of a score by Nikki Zamani.
Roosevelt had the final possession in the fourth but was unable to get a shot off before time expired, sending the game to overtime.
Six goals were scored between the two teams in the overtime period, with the Lunas enjoying a 2-1 edge in the first overtime period, and the Rough Riders outscoring the Lunas 2-1 in the second, including a score from Yasuda, a lob shot just over the keeper, with just 18 seconds left in the period that forced sudden death.
Lalelei Mataafa scored a game-high six goals for the Lunas in the loss. Miranda led the Riders with three goals, and the trio of Yasuda, April Gomes and Laura Young each scored twice.
